I posted on my blog some information on our upcoming 21 day canoe trip to parts of the “Little North” that Dave Phillips and I are doing beginning August 16.

Dave will be bringing his SPOT and we will have it in tracking mode, so it’s possible to see where we are during the trip. The SPOT link is on my blog in the post for August 1, 2009.

CII Canoe:
The route you are proposing to take is about as wild as it it gets.

Rick Pargeter did the trip from the Albany through Petawa Creek to Auger in August 2007. You might want to ask him how he made out through there.

From Hurst through Felsia, and on up the Witchwood River and Lake to Whiteclay Lake is about as hard assed as it gets. The few portages that go around the non runnable chutes on this section of the Witchwood River are all clear and useable, but there are no portages around the runnable chutes/rapids for upstream travellers.

Out of Felsia going south there are about 14 disturbances on the River that need to be lined or dragged up in addition to the 6 rapids on this section of the river that have portages around them.
Campsites are few and far betweeen.

Good Luck.

Ben Gervais and perhaps others have done the section below Whiteclay through to Pikitigushi Lake and could comment on that part of your trip.

Thank you for the information. I was aware of both Ben and Rick's reports.

I was part of a work party that took two weeks back a couple of years ago clearing ports between Whiteclay and Pikitiguiashi. There was an incredible amount of blowdown. Hopefully more has not come down..(there is an old burn south of South Annette Lake)
Otherwise that part of the route should be fine.

The beginning too from where your put in to your exit from the Albany..then it will get interesting (refer to Mac's post),

Three weeks sounds like a long time but it will not be.. Move smartly while you can.

While the Atlas of the Little North may be the best reference between the Albany south to Whiteclay at this time there will be a series of maps put out by the Wabakimi Project in the future covering this area. We have found the Atlas not to be entirely accurate in the area south of Whiteclay.

Greenbush can be one mean lake with huge waves. Rockcliffe is very pretty..

Bryan,

We were looking for two additional paddlers earlier in the year, but we are now all set to go with just the two of us. The trip is less than two weeks away.

Littleredcanoe,

You must have been on the group that Ben referenced in his posting about going through the recently cleared ports with wood chips everywhere from the chainsaw.

chuck and i came out last sunday, 21 days after a one day weather related delay flying in. chuck will write it up when he gets time and it should be a good read with plenty of photos. very high water most of the route presented some real problems.

other than some Cotton related trail crew activity on the east side, it appeared that we were the only ones to go through this season. from a paddling perspective, the area is in demise through lack of use. portages are growing back in. the high water portages that have always been there (the ones we needed) haven't been used for decades. saw a couple OP boats, but no canoes in 21 days.

I just posted a link to this one.
So I'm up to date on TRs posted in the Ontario TR Forum, except for some of Lee's (I think).
In fact, I think I've posted a link to every TR posted in all 13 TR Forums.
Please let me know if I've missed any.

I posted the link to this one in the I through P folder, under Pashkokogan:

I've paddled part of this Route (Whiteclay to the logging road on the Pikititigushi) but I don't know the Wabakimi boundaries.

Questions:
1. Should I post the link instead in the Wabakimi folder?
2. Sorry if I messed up looking for them, but are the UTMs available? They would help others get through some tough country.
3. Is it true that Bad Medicine Lake is named for the portage (rather than the portage for the lake)?

Yours in paddling, Allan

I enjoyed reading your trip report, Guys....So are you going back this next year for some more adventures in the Boreal?

The log on the Witchwood, that should have been completly removed, on the portage that you didn't really need to use, was the result of the chain saw and it's operator falling into the water .

The Albany is quite an interesting river Heh!
