The Route

Well, we’ve got the map the park produces and we’ve purchased Touratech from Richard. The maps are printed in 1:105,000 and posted on our computer room wall.

I’m currently transcribing all the portages onto that set and it’ll be our primary planning map set.

I’ve also got a set printed at 1:75000, which we intend to use during the trip. We experimented with this scale on a trip from Biscotasing to Indian Lake late this summer and found it to be adequate for navigation.

Our initial goal will be to explore as much of the park as time will allow. If we can set up resupply points along the way it might be possible to do a large serpentine route. If we’re limited to what we can carry then our longest loop is limited to about 20 days – and that’s hoping we can catch some fish for dinners.

This is where Albert will be of great assistance. His knowledge of local conditions, interesting and significant places and his aid in establishing resupply points will help to flesh out the possibilities. Chimo Air has also agreed to do our resupply drops so now it looks like we’ll be able to push off and be gone for 60 days.

Albert will be scheduling some trips that will intersect with ours so maybe we can resupply then. It’ll also give us the opportunity to meet some of his clients and have a safety check point.

Here's a link to our route planning spreadsheet. It's what we use to plan our days and you'll be able to see the route.

As I create more maps I'll update the sheet with links to them.
