Route Description
Access to Put-In Information:

We took a chartered Air Tindi Twin Otter from Yellowknife and landed at Tundra Tom's old camp on the Western edge of Whitefish Lake. Parts of the camp are still standing but its in rough shape.

Technical Guide:

I do not have a technical route description as I did not keep a log. My photos are my log and can be viewed at http://www.lewyckyj.com/Thelon%202017.htm

The route took us across all of Whitefish Lake and then through the Lynx Creek to Lynx Lake. We traversed Lynx Lake in a South Easterly direction, finding the entrance to the Thelon River at the Eastern most edge of Lynx Lake. We came across a number of thunderstorms in this lakes region, great big swirling ones that make you nervous. We canoed the Thelon and portaged the worst of Thelon Falls and put in lower down in the rapids, sliding our canoes down the grassy slope. Water levels were low. We ran into cold, windy, rainy weather which shortened our trip. Instead of Eyeberry Lake, we only made it as far as Roger Caitlin's cabin on Double Barrel Lake. Bugs were not bad at all this year and the Aurora over Double Barrel Lake was just stunning! Fishing was excellent and we got to see Musk Ox and Wolverine but no Caribou and no Grizzly Bear, although we saw lots of tracks.
