French River region

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version
Preliminaries.

Before providing information for the French River area, I'd like to explain how I've set up things for the Georgian Bay area in general.
I use three folders, as follows:

Georgian Bay coast
Coverage:
Everything of primarily coastal nature from the downstream end of Lake Superior to Tobermory.
Specific inclusions:
Saint Mary's River, North Channel, Manitoulin Island, Georgian Bay proper (Killarney village to Tobermory), Georgian Bay Islands National Park, Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Park.
http://www.myccr.com/SectionForums/view ... 07&t=33994

Georgian Bay basin
Specific inclusions:
Killbear Provincial Park, Massasauga Provincial Park (except when used primarily to access the Bay), Sturgeon Bay Provincial Park), Magnetawan River, Naiscoot River, Gibson River area (Gibson River, Six-Mile Lake, McDonald River, McCrae Lake, etc), Moon River, Musquash River, Severn River, Nottawasaga River, Beaver River.
Specific exclusions:
1. French River, Pickerel River, Key River and area.
2. Routes in the Muskoka area (rather ill defined).
http://www.myccr.com/SectionForums/view ... 07&t=36202

French River region (this thread)
Specific inclusions:
French River, Pickerel River, Key River, Lake Nipissing, Noganosh area (including the Wolf River), Wanapitei River below Wanapitei Lake.
http://www.myccr.com/SectionForums/view ... 07&t=33992
Wanapitei River. Information.
Wikipedia stub.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanapitei_River
Ed notes:
1. I place Wanapitei Lake, and the Wanapitei River above the lake, in the Temagami region.
2. I place the Wanapitei River below the lake in the French River region.
3. The reach between the lake and Hwy 69/400 is dammed twice and is blocked also by three generating stations; it is not often paddled. Richard Culpeper's report is then rather special.

French River region

Ed notes:
1. The "Voyageur Channel" marked on the topos is not the channel used by the Voyageurs. They used instead the "Old Voyageur Channel" (not marked on the topo), as discussed in Toni Harting's book.
It was Eric Morse (Fur Trade Canoe Routes of Canada / Then and Now, University of Toronto Press, 1969) who located the correct route, using the old journals.
The Che-Mun article
http://www.ottertooth.com/che-mun/109/109-5.htm
has some photos.
2. Entries will be sorted by access point, sometime.
3. Regrets for the present mess.

Lower Pickerel River. Information.
1. Pickerel River downstream from Hwy 69.
The Pickerel River is marked as turning south about 2 km below the rail line. In fact, the main flow is toward Pickerel Bay and the French River. Indeed, the Pickerel below the turn is often bone dry in places.
2. Eastern Outlet.
The Eastern Outlet (through Bowens Bay) is clear, including the passages on both sides of Dokis Island and the passage through Whistler Bay.
3. The three Genessee Bay outlets (July 2010 status).
The western outlet was weedy but had plenty of water.
The central outlet was completely blocked.
The eastern outlet, which connects Genessee Bay with the channel on the west side of Dokis Island, was shallow but easily traversed.
