Great Lakes Basin

Basins of Lake Superior and of Lake Michigan

Basin of Lake Superior

Specific inclusions.
Bad River, Bois Brule River, Marengo River (Bad River), Montreal River, Nemadji River, White River (Bad River).

Bois Brule River. Information.
Ed note: Flows into Lake Superior.
Ed note: Too often called the Brule River, and so easily confused with the “true” Brule River (also canoed) that flows along the WI-MI state line; the latter river joins with the Michigamme River to form the Menominee River. Please note that Brule River State Forest “encompasses the Bois Brule River for most of its length from its headwaters to Lake Superior” and so the confusion persists even at the state level.

White River (Bad River). Information.
Ed notes:
1. This White River is a tributary of the Bad River, which flows into Lake Superior, reaching it at Odanah. It is not to be confused with the White River that flows into the Fox River (Illinois), or the much smaller White River that flows into the Fox River (Green Bay).
2. No Wikipedia information was found for the river; the first link below is for the settlement of White River in Ashland County.
3. All known Routes (day trips?) start at Maple Ridge Road (near Mason, Bayfield County?) and end at the dam (White River Flowage) at Rte 112. The Every Trail entry give the distance as Route description 13.9 miles.

Brule River. Information.
Ed notes:
1. Terminates at the outlet from Michigamme Lake (impoundment of the Michigamme River), thus forming the Menominee River.
2. Confused with the Bois Brule River at all levels (public, commercial and state). For example, Brule River State Forest lies along the Bois Brule River, and the settlement of Brule lies on the Bois Brule River.
3. Forms the state line between WI and MI for much of its length and so I suggest that paddlers consult also entries for Michigan.

Fox River. Information.
Ed notes:
1. This Fox River (the better known of the two Fox Rivers in Wisconsin), flows into Green Bay.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_River_(Wisconsin
From its source east of Swan Lake, it flows initially westward to within a few km of Portage (on the Wisconsin River) before turning north and east, and eventually emptying into Green Bay.
2. “Geographers divide the Fox into two distinct sections, the Upper Fox River, flowing from central Wisconsin into Lake Winnebago, and the Lower Fox River, linking Lake Winnebago to Lake Michigan.”
3. It is not the Fox River in Wisconsin that is a tributary of the Illinois River. I call this one the Fox River (Illinois), others call it the Little Fox River or the Illinois-Fox River. In Illinois, it is known, naturally, as the Fox River.
4. I have not attempted to distinguish web information for one Fox River from that for the other.
