Definition of the Temagami region.
1. A definition: The Temagami area is like photography; it's hard to define in words, we just know it when we see it.
2. Definition in the By-Laws of the Friends of Temagami:
"The Temagami Region is defined as the lands bordered by the following water systems:
the Wanapitei River to the west,
the Montreal River watershed to the north,
the Ottawa River to the east, and
to the south, Wanapitei Lake, Matagamasi Lake, Kukagami Lake, Washagami Lake, the Chiniguchi River, the Sturgeon River south to the confluence of the Temagami River, and then east along latitude 46 degrees 34 minutes 30 seconds to the Ottawa River.
The Temagami Region includes the Lady Evelyn - Smoothwater, Solace, Sturgeon River, Obabika River and Makobe Provincial Parks.
This definition recognises the existence of Trans Canada Highway 11 and the Ontario Northland Railway as integral to the regional and national transportation infrastructure."

Montreal River and West Montreal River; Gowganda to Wapus Creek. Guide.

Callan, Kevin. (A Paddler’s Guide to) The Rivers of Ontario and Quebec, Boston Mills Press, Erin (2003).
Route description: Gowganda (Rte 560), Edith Lake Road, Edith Lake, Obushkong Lake and Montreal River, East Beaver Lake (at Toporama?) and Miller Creek confluence, past Crotch Lake. Ed note: Perhaps I am misreading at least one map, but Toporama seems to say that Tommy Lake lies between Split Falls and the unnamed falls, whereas the Callan map appears to say that Tommy Lake lies below both falls; the label for Tommy Lake seems to be misplaced on one map or the other. Sisseney Lake, The Forks, go left (up the West Montreal River; going right takes you down the Montreal River proper), Matachewan settlement and Moyneur Rapids, Oldwoman Rapids, Matachewan Lake, Great Northern Bend and Matachewan (High) Falls; side trip through Red Pine Narrows to north end of Matachewan Lake; Matachewan Falls portage, Mistinikon Lake, Rte 566 bridge, Bell Island, bridge (near Yarrow Lake), Rankin Lake outlet, Cleaver Creek confluence, Penassi Lake and Foot Creek confluence, Metikemedo Lake, left to Wapus Creek and Rte 560.

the Sturgeon River can also be accessed as follows:
1. from the Wanapitei River (through Haentschel, Sunk, Cedar and Stewart Lakes) to the Sturgeon just above Paul Lake,
2. from Chiniguchi Lake (through Sawhorse, Adelaide, Button, Dougherty, Frederick and Stouffer Lakes) to the Sturgeon just below Perkins Lake, and
3. from Chiniguchi Lake (McConnell Bay, through Laura, Rawson, Sunfish, Halleck and Hammend Lakes, and Halleck Creek) to the Sturgeon a few km above Upper Goose Falls.
And the Stouffer-Dougherty-Chiniguchi route, followed by travel on the Chiniguchi River to the Sturgeon, is suggested as an escape route if the Sturgeon is low.

Sturgeon River side trips. Solace Lake area. Guide.
ALLAN: Links to Sturgeon River PP, Obabika River PP.
Ed note: These side trips pass through the Solace Lake Conservation Reserve.
Wilson, Hap. Canoeing, Kayaking & Hiking Temagami. Boston Mills Press, Erin (2004).
Title at source: Route 22. Solace Lake and Pilgrim Creek Routes.
Ed note: Hap Wilson had different intentions, but I see Chapter 22 as documenting two side trips, both traversed downstream and more or less parallel to the Sturgeon, plus connector routes. Both side trips break away from the Sturgeon at Hamlow Lake (a few km downstream from Scarecrow Lake).
Side trip 1 passes through Pilgrim Lake and Bluesucker Lake and then along the Yorston River, rejoining the Sturgeon by the connector route from Yorston Lake. Here is the route description: Hamlow Lake, Regan Lake, chain of ponds, Upper Pilgrim Creek, Maggie Lake, Pilgrim Lake, Rodd Lake, Benner Lake, Bluesucker Lake and Yorston River, Mudchannel Lake, Long Lake, Seagram Lake, Yorston Lake; rejoin the Sturgeon after about 100 m on Pilgrim Creek, via the connector route "Sturgeon to Yorston Link". Alternatively, one can continue down the Yorston River, rejoining the Sturgeon a few km above the Obabika River confluence (Chapter 2); other continuations, which avoid the Sturgeon altogether, are documented in Chapter 11.
Side trip 2, closer to the Sturgeon, passes through Solace Lake and then down Pilgrim Creek to rejoin the Sturgeon. Here is the route description: Hamlow Lake, Regan Lake, chain of ponds, Einar Lake, Solace Lake; so far, this is the Wilson's "Hamlow to Solace Link". The route continues through Solace Creek, Narrows Lake, Muck Lake, Pilgrim Creek, River Lake and Limit Lake to the Sturgeon River.
"Selkirk to Solace Link”. This one connects Ghoul Lake (above Twin Falls) to Solace Lake; it can be traversed in either direction.
An untitled route connects Solace Lake to Pilgrim Lake, via Samson, Bill and Maggie Lakes.
