Here is my report of Gaspereau Lake. I did not get a "wilderness" vibe from this lake. It is large, boater and cottage heavy and quite frankly difficult to navigate for the novice. Overall thoughts find another lake if you want to truly get out and unwind on a tranquil lake.

Right,so I debating saying anything about this but in the interest of accuracy-somewhat anyway, and for the benefit of other paddlers....here goes....

The Wiki. Of interest is the box to the right with the stat of the lake.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaspereau_Lake

Once again,the map...

https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Gaspereau+Lake/@44.9369136,-64.5801172,12794m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x4b584ea28f79e76d:0xafec4c4bf3b9d0fa

If you look at the map to the west or left side of your screen you'll see two attached lakes that run north/south or up/down on your screen. These are two mile lake and four mile lake. With 55 km of shoreline plus these two plus islands your opportunities are extensive.
The roads you see marked on the map at different points are primarily woods roads. Many not passable and most gated at the point of origin on the secondary roads.
The eastern end by the #12 hwy is where the cottages are concentrated.Almost nothing elsewhere.
The north and south shores in particular offer lots of boony experiences relatively speaking of course. Most of the boat traffic you see will go from welton landing straight up the lake to two/four mile-known for it's big bass so most of the outboard types head for there.
We've been there many times on shore and sometimes noticed a boat far off in the distance heading up or down the lake and sometimes not.
Generally, all access is from the #12 side.Few ever tried to go in the woods roads to access the upper end do to the difficult-or virtual impossibility.

My evaluation:

Remoteness: Yes and no.None at the hwy/cottages,lots around the rest of it.

Camping: All kinds.

Fishing: Bass and Chain Pickerel.

Wildlife: Deer,Bear,Coyotes,Mink,Beaver, muskrat etc,the usual NS mix.

Interesting facts. This lake has a rough E/W orientation and esp in a west wind can make sizable rollers and whitecaps going the length of the lake. It's something to be aware of and careful of.Planning on early morning or late afternoon travels isn't a bad idea. You can easily plan on hours of paddling after leaving welton's landing to make it up the lake as you're typically fighting a headwind/waves.

2ibc- As with most lakes you're not familiar with, nobody would know the layout without a map-unless it was small and you could stand on the shore and see it all.I would assume that's to be expected.
You seem disappointed you couldn't access the more remote end with your vehicle and find a "wilderness" experience.I'm not surprised as easy access typically means lots of traffic-as you find on the hwy end.
Lastly, and no offense, but paddling a few strokes off shore and plunking yourself between a hwy and cottages may not give you all the data you require to render judgement on the other 99% of the lake.
Having said that,it is what it is.We like as we can get there for an overnighter reasonably easily, have a good time and see few people once we get up lake a bit. It's no interior NS so it's to be expected but for being so close to people,we find at lots of quiet places. Our last overnighter as we were heading back down the lake we saw four kayaks doing the same and that was it-and I was ok with it. :)

If you are looking for some more south mountain action, I will give away one of my secret fishing spots. Of course, it's been thirty years since I have been back there, but on google earth, the roads don't look terrible.

Whenever i am doing that back road driving, I find it really useful to have a regular gps unit with the topo maps loaded on it. They will save you a lot of grief. They don't show all the roads, but you will be able to place yourself in close proximity to your destination a lot easier.

Anyway, Tomahawk Lake, quite remote, with some very good spec fishing close by. We could drive right in and set up camp right off the road. Lake was right there, but the highlight was bushwhacking for 15 minutes or so to a series of still waters. Loaded with trout, impossible to not catch one every cast.

Image

Here's the google earth shot…there two ways to get to it, one involving a road a few miles from the farm I lived on in Tremont, the other coming up the Aylesford road, if i remember correctly. There are many lakes back in this area that are unpopulated, if i remember correctly, in my time it was all Crown land, don't know if it has changed.

Image

I think a few of the lakes in that area, like Cloud Lake, were used by the military as training sites, not sure if that is still the case. I can attest to the remoteness. A truck is always better than a car.

Hi Rhaslam, nice area for sure, the old stomping grounds for many years. At one time,I could leave south river lake in the car and be on the main road by lake paul in 20 min.Summer before last I took my wife and daughter in fishing in the truck and was a bit over an hour. The road has gotten rougher over the years with no maintenance and if you remember the short swampy section just after you turned off towards tomahawk by upper palmer-that's flowed over the road and made for some nice deep holes-also a couple from tomahawk to south river.Truck only for sure-preferably 4wd.
Up to upper palmer and circling back out is still passable by car.Cloud is now the local kids drunken weekend camp out so I'd avoid that, unless that's your thing. :D

I'm glad to hear it is still passable, maybe when I retire I'll get back there again, lots of good memories. You spend anytime on the North Mountain? There was a little lake I used to go into, very rough road in, originally had smallmouth bass in it, but then they introduced some kind of new trout they called Tiger Trout. Canoe camped there a couple of times, fishing was great, but can't for the life of me remember the name of the Lake.

No,I never fished much on the north except for little brookies.I used to rabbit hunt there a lot when I had beagles that would hunt and not just pets. :D I'm not familiar with that lake but would be interested to hear more and about the bass/tiger trout.
Maybe these will bring back a couple memories of that area....(all I've got for pics of these places)

Nice family pics! There's a lot of Nova Scotia people never see….I found that lake on the North Mountain. Elliot Lake
Image

We always came in from the west side, as I think the road from the east went through a farmers property. Great little lake for fly fishing!

Elliot Lake eh?I'd never heard of it.Though I've been by Arlington enough times.I'll have to grab the fly rod and ck it out sometime to see what's there now-once the black flies and ticks die down. :D

Found this.I can honestly say I've never heard tell of it.Always "crossbreeds" to us. :)

They were scrappy little guys, although i think the biggest one we got was about 10 inches. Same for the bass, not that big, but lots of them, and lots of surface action. Gosh, i was back for the first time in 15 years two summers ago, and only had time to eat lobster and mussels.

Gaspereau Lake is one of my favourites, both summer and winter.
The north shore is mostly undeveloped and there is very little
motorboat activity due to the many rocks.

On June 17 we had a lazy 9 km paddle with 10 people in 2 canoes and 6
kayaks. I stayed around for another 5 km.

BTW Welton's Landing (or Dorrey Cove)is at the north-east corner of the lake, where the outlet
dam and fish ladder is. That's where we launched from. Motor boats launch from the south end (Lockharts Cove).

Two And Four Mile Lakes are part of the western end of Gaspereau Lake
I have paddled to them before from Weltons Landing (on Rt 12) but it
is a long trip.

On Oct 21 2014, 7 people in 5 kayaks and 1 canoe accessed them from a
fairly new wood road via North River Road and Granite Lane. The new
road shows up on Google aerial and the latest Toporama map, visible
here:http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/draw/?type=tc&zoom=15&center=44.943,-64.614

I have also added the road to Openstreetmaps

The path to the lake starts at (44.9427,-64.6127)
(UTM E=372768 N=4977850 20T)
It is an easy 50 m path to the water. There is parking space for 4 or
5 vehicles to park about 100 m further up the road.
