Thanks, David, for the clarification.

Here is what I wrote in my blog regarding Layman's trip.
Moffatt followed Tyrrell’s route, namely the east channel.
Comment 1. Bill Layman and Lynda Holland chose the west/leftmost channel in 2001, I don’t know why.

I note that Layman incorrectly identified the west/leftmost channel as the one where Moffatt died.
Comment 2. After the tragedy, the Moffatt party portaged from Marjorie Lake to Aberdeen Lake, I assume because the rapids below Marjorie are particularly difficult, as described in another publication by Layman (2002)

Alan, given that in the past my only portage on this section was a drag over a ledge amounting to a few 20 yards at best, I indicate my last portage from Kunwak to Dubawnt in a red line. You will notice the red box in upper right hand corner. That is where I found it necessary to portage because of river conditions. I specifically remember it was a dot of and island close to the right hand side of river and that it was a significant enough drop to cause me to do what I did, which is generally contraindicated. No rapids indicated yet a severe drop.

Thanks! That is indeed the channel that Moffatt followed, the one that skirts the esker on the north side.
But I'm still confused :-(

That aside, the new topo at http://www.mytopo.com/maps/index.cfm shows a double bar at the rapids where Moffatt died. The old topo didn't do that.
But the topo at http://atlas.gc.ca/toporama/en/index.html shows only a + at those rapids.

Oh boy.
Thanks for your patience. Allan

Alan: "That aside, the new topo at http://www.mytopo.com/maps/index.cfm shows a double bar at the rapids where Moffatt died. The old topo didn't do that. " I believe I have map that indicated no water connection between Nowleye and Kamilukuak. I also have a google map indicating a water route. digging in the weeds. We talked about this if I remember correctly. I do remember When I lost a 100 dollar bet to Juanita about there being no more rapids on lower Maguse because none were indicated. Alan, I could NOT access your sources concerning Moffatt's last rapid, but I did find a rapid and carry on my map might be a surprise to you. Just above R2 with carry on right.

I have not been able to open the link and see "a double bar at the rapids where Moffatt died."
