I'm planning a quick one night trip next weekend to either the QE2 Wildlands or the McCrae Lake area.

Where I am in Southern Ontario we still don't have any snow, but I've heard that the is some further north.

Does anyone have any info about how much snow might be on the ground in those areas or what ice conditions might be like? I'm just wondering so I have a little better of an idea about what to expect next weekend.

In the Bancroft area, snow depth is about a foot and more like ice than snow... melting and refreezing has created a very hard crust and snowshoes aren't needed to walk on it. Lake ice is said to be risky but I haven't spent any time checking that out. You might be able to travel easily over the crust with some hard-soled hiking boots and toboggan.

Go with the assumption all ice is extremely unsafe this year.
It does not mater the size of the stream.
Water flows are very high on all watersheds making for areas that might normally crossable in normal winters conditions un-passable.
There have already been a number of deaths on the ice because of this.
Even north of the Sault the ice climbers have not been able to get into the Agawa Canyon yet because of this.
Throw ropes and ice picks are a must have peice of equipment this year.
It might be worth looking into an area where water crossings are less.
I know the alure of "free" camping, but in a year like this, unless winter comes in much harder, alternative plans are a must.

Other news reports say Lake Simcoe has ice thicknesses ranging from three inches up to seven... there are already some ice huts out there but only near shore, in shallow water.
