Hey Folks

I know these types of questions are impossible to answer with any type of definitiveness, but does anyone know roughly when the ice is usually out at the north end of Lake Nipigon?

Third weekend in May would be a "for sure" (usually). Certainly not before the end of April. I can get an accurate prediction for this year sometime next week.

Talked to one of my buddies who runs charters on lake Nipigon...he thinks ice out is still quite a far off. He said all the cold weather we've had in the last few weeks refroze the top foot of slush, so that ice is thicker now than it was during the winter. I can repost again if things warm up.

Thanks RHaslam!

I'm planning on arriving there, via the Kopka River, around May 30th. We're planning on paddling up to the North end of the lake and heading out by train from either the Mud River or Ferland stop on the rail line. I figure we should be safe by that time, but if you have any updates over the coming weeks, that would be helpful.

Hey Seth

Keep checking this site:
http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/modis/modis.cgi/modis?region=g&page=1

It's real-time satellite images of Northern Ontario.
I'm watching it daily, eagerly awaiting the break-up.

Mike
