View topic - Pukaskwa River Canoe Route Maintenance

I am happy to report my outdoor education class has just returned from a week of work on the Pukaskwa River. This was our second trip down the river in the past three years.

During the trip we work in partnership with Pukaskwa National Park staff clearing portage trails and campsites. The route is now in the best shape it has been in for some time.

Lot of gear. You had a good sized group. And it looks like you have got the right stuff for the trip.

I've very happy that you are involved in the maintenance of the puk river. It's a wonderful project for the local school kids. Are they writing and posting a TR?

Great pictures! It's wonderful to see someone taking kids out on trips - thanks for doing all of the work to give them an unforgettable experience. Thanks to your "superiors" for having the wisdom and courage to permit such trips.

The kids are working on writing trip reflections this week. I will post links to some when they are completed.

We also have enough up to date info to produce a planning guide for the route. We hope to have that available through Pukaskwa Park by next season.

John R sent me your pics from the East Puk. Looks like you had quite a trip.

I am fortunate to have administrators that have confidence in my abilities as a trip leader. They have paid for me to obtain the ORCKA instructor, SRT and WFA certifications and support me in developing a program that has a standard of care and planning of the highest quality.

Luckily we have a long tradition of outdoor programs in our board. Rob Haslam in Geraldton is running a program that was started 30+ yrs ago. John Robarts ran a similar program at Marathon for many years.

We also celebrate our successes in local media in order to inform parents and community members of what we are doing and excite potential students to participate.

Gord, Awesome stuff. I sure wish those opportunities were available for me when I was young. The local canoe trip I did in Illinois paled by comparison. I've seen the quality handiwork of Rob first hand, and it's great to know that you've done such great stuff on the Puk.
