Well, I'm making my first attempt at a video trip report. I only have Day 1 put together so far. It runs about 13 minutes for the day, which is close the max you can upload on You Tube as a single video. I'm hoping to get another couple of days done before I leave on vacation at the end of the week - I figured the warning is only fair if you don't want to be left hanging.

Here's the link: Shirley Lake - Day 1

Since it's my first cut at a video trip report, I'd appreciate feedback on what you like, what works and what we could improve on.

Thanks!

Nice vid! I enjoyed the light-hearted humour. Also enjoyed the simple paddling shots. The sound of paddling makes me feel calm, like I'm on the water, too. Looking forward to following episodes!

Looks like you are doing a fine job. I like how you tansition from one scene to the next. That would be the day though where my kids are carrying the packs to the canoe while I stand there and film them.

Now Skeeter - sometimes Peter got to film while I carried stuff.

I'm working on day 2 tonight, I'll see how far I get.

I managed to get Day 2 pieced together and posted last night. I'm not sure that I'll get any further until after vacation.

Shirley Lake, Algonquin - Day 2

Enjoy!

I like how your dog stands up at about the 5:40 mark of the video almost as if in support of your son in the Clam vs Fish discussion. I think the dog called you out on it  Nice campfire ending to the video.

Skeeter - the trips not over 'til it's over. I may catch up yet! (or maybe not, you'll just have to wait and see. )

Esther - I'll put together the written report at some point too. That often doesn't happen until around New Years  but hey, we all need something new to help us daydream through the winter, don't we? :D

Nice videos! It's great that you are introducing your son to canoe tripping. Congrats to your son for all of the fish that he caught. Maybe he can give my dad and I a few pointers. It was good to see you cooking over the fire. Thanks for sharing.

Take care,
Cousin Pete

OK, I know Erhard has assigned me my Tom Thomson essay to write up, but I figured I should finish up at least the video portion of the Shirley Lake trip first.

Here's day 3 for anyone still following along.

Shirley Lake, Algonquin - Day 3

I should have the last day wrapped up either this week or next.

Many thanks for posting that report.
I have made the corresponding entry in Ontario Route Information, Algonquin region, but for days 1 and 2 only. You`ll find it under Access 17 at
http://myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtopic.php?f=107&t=33991
I`ll edit the entry when the rest of the report is posted.

BTW, can anyone straighten me out regarding that access point? I see that the Park people call it Shall Lake, but is it located rather on Farm Lake, or elsewhere?

Allan, the access point is still called Shall Lake from earlier on when another road provided access on or near that lake.

The new access is actually on the Opeongo river between Farm lake and Crotch lake with Shall further to the east, past Crotch ... on a top map the parking lot and boat launch is beside (west side) of the Shirley lake road where it crosses the river.

I'm pretty sure that the access point used to be on the point of land between Crotch and Shall lakes. I worked up in that area back in 1990 and while we usually headed further in along the logging road we did drive in to the access point once. I remember that the road followed the hydro lines east from the Major Lake Road for most of the way before branching off north to the put in. I'm pretty sure that the put in was on the east side of Crotch Lake were that string of about 6 campsites is right side by side.

As Frozen Tripper said, the new access is right between Farm Lake and Crotch Lake. The section of river there is pretty short. Common reference when I've been up there the last couple of years is that if you put in on the south side of the road next to the permit office then you are putting in to Crotch Lake but if you put in 100 yards away on the north side of the road where the parking lot is then you are putting in to Farm Lake.
