View topic - Bloodvein pictures

Spend a couple of weeks on the Bloodvein River in Manitoba earlier this month.

Kautunigan Lake to Lake Winnipeg. Lots of fun with about 40 some odd rapids most of which can be run. Most of the rapids are ledges - short and fast. We usually camped at portages.

Here's what the original looked like.


I 'enhanced' the reds a bit to bring out the image. Obviously too much but by the time you reduce it to fit the forum, it needed something.

We were lucky. We had a chat with a fellow that we met on the last larger set of rapids. He'd been on the Bloodvein 14 times and knew the river well. He showed us this one which we couldn't find even though it is marked on the Hap Wilson book. BTW, Hap's book was indispensable for finding portages, campsites and rapid types. Very, very well done.

I'm trying to knock off at least one heritage river per province/territory before I get too old for big wavetrains and longer portages. Next year it's the Nahanni.

Thanks for sharing your trip, Ted--and great pic.'s. The colorful one of the float plane was pretty scenic, and I especially liked the gorgeous sunset (what living room wouldn't look nice with a blowup of that on its wall?).

Cheers everyone,
I hope to get most of the pics and a trip report up on my website in the next few weeks.
The weather was hot and sunny except for a thunderstorm one night. Almost too hot. Keeping hydrated was an issue. mosquitoes and blackflies were not a problem but ticks were. I picked up 11 of the little bloodthirsty things.

At the Chap falls portage we met up with a group of 8 lads from a camp in Minnesota. They were pushing hard - 12 hour on the water a day with mostly biscuits for food. We had just made up a whack of apple/fruit crumble so we ladled out handfuls of the stuff as they passed by. Also met a foursome at the last major portage. The Dad let us know exactly where the pictographs were. We took a video of them shooting a rapid and are mailing it off to them in Winnipeg. Other than that, nobody.

A highlight of the trip was staying at the Bloodvein lodge and meeting William, the owner. We went out pickerel fishing and his lovely wife made up a big batch of the lightest best tasting bannock to go with the pickerel feed.

Hi P16,
Off-hand I don't remember - they were rentals out of Winnipeg.
I've asked my tripping buddies in the hopes that they have better memories.
All but one was a 16 footer which we all felt too small for our weight and rapids.
The one 17' worked well.
