Hi everybody! My Instagram feed is in need of more canoe adventures. I'm sure there are plenty of CCR members who have awesome feeds. What are your usernames?
I'm @tear_knee, and I pretty much only post nature/canoeing/camping photos.

I agree! We already follow each other but there's a general lack of canoeists

It's basically just a photo-sharing social media platform. I really like it. It's a much more positive community experience than Facebook or Twitter... Everyone is very supportive and you don't have to deal with negative comments or posts like you do on Facebook. When I scroll through my Instagram feed, I am often inspired or excited. When I scroll through my Facebook feed, I am usually annoyed.
I've met some cool people through Instagram. I now have a pen-pal in Kentucky who is a super cool woman my age and she does all kinds of neat bush-crafty things, I've gotten tips on accessing crown land for winter camping, I learned about alternatives to next year's big trip routes from a Keewaydin tripper, and I hooked up with the Friends of Temagami organization (I now volunteer for them, managing their Instagram account @friendsoftemagami).
It's fun!

See, that's what's so great about Instagram. People like your photos and leave nice comments, not snarky ellipses.

I actually posted a vid, then couldn't delete... so the ....

Not snarky.

I'll try to delete this post in a minute which might make things even more confusing.

littleredcanoe: hashtags are used as search terms. So if you want people who like canoes to see your photos and follow you, you could tag the photo with #canoe #canoetripping #backcountry etc. You can also use them as a punchline, where people won't necessarily be searching for that term but it might make people laugh. For example, on a photo of our winter tent, I tagged it with #wintercamping, #campvibes (which is a very popular term) but also #frozenbootvibes which hadn't been used before but made me snicker.

You can delete a post as long as no one has posted a reply after it. I don't think that has changed in a very long time.

You can edit your post to say something other than "...", which can be misinterpreted.

Why Instagram? To Keep up with the Kardashians, of course.

Back to the topic of origin...

I'm a dinosaur, and have not felt the urge to frequent "social media sites". Facebook has become particularly non-welcoming of late.

Lots of social interaction occurs right here on the forum. All those things/organizations you mentioned have had much boostage from being posted about here and on other forums.

But, you know, I also only have one telephone. It's the same landline one we've had for over 30 years.

:D

I think Instagram and other social media sites have a wider appeal than forums. I grew up when forums were basically the only form of "social media" and way of connecting with other people who share the same interests, so I still enjoy using them. A lot of younger people grew up with Facebook, Twitter, and the like and never had to learn basic HTML tags or posting rules etc. Organizations definitely see a boost from sites like this, but to use the Friends of Temagami as an example: since I took over the account we had a 110% boost in followers on that platform and a 80% increase in user engagement (likes, comments, etc), which will only lead to more engagement and resources on a real-world level.
The only social media platform I use regularly and enjoy using is Instagram... Excepting this forum and a handful of others, of course.
