One more thing... I recently got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS 100 point and shoot. Very impressed with that camera.

That could be a neat trick with the tripod, I'll see what opportunities I get. Once I have the camera gear lined up I'll also be figuring out if I need to upgrade the tripod. The one I have now is decent but inexpensive. It's held up to being packed along on trips but not sure it's strong enough for heavier DSLR and lens.

That Panasonic is one with a 1" sensor which would be a big improvement in image quality over my aging Canon SX30. The 1" sensor cameras are kind of tempting, but I'm at the point where I want to finally establish a solid base of DSLR gear.
