Did a little more digging.........

Some of the cookies associated with the Myccr domain are being set to expire at end of session, others are set to expire in June 2011, May 2012 and May 2013, the one named has_js keeps coming up as "end of session" even after I delete it.

Quote:
I have set "until expire" and seem to have none of the problems you and others describe.

Me too, I have cookies for sites I haven't visited in years.

I can remember my password, and my handle, but the board software can't remember me from one time to the next. :o

If the "Remember Me" button isn't going to function, can it be removed?

I don't know what to tell you, ezwater. The "remember me" button works perfectly for me.

Obviously, there is a problem somewhere for some people.

I don't have a clue why it works for some people and not others.

Sorry I can't be of any help with this issue.

Yesterday the "Remember me" button worked *once* for me!

This morning myccr didn't remember me, and my first attempt at logging in failed without any failure message (wrong password, etc.). Spooky. :o

Tonight it took at least 3 login attempts. The first couple of times at least it didn't recognize my username.

I'm starting to think it's an issue with a server failover configuration at the new hosting provider. Either that or it's a load balancer issue and sometimes the load balancer is directing you to a server that isn't properly configured. That would explain why it's so sporadic.

I can try.

Basically if a system is set up to be load balanced, then you have more than 1 server on the backend with each of them doing the same thing. When you go to an address like "http://www.myccr.com" then it first goes to a load balancer machine that decides which of the web servers is the least busy and passes you on to the available server.

So imagine that we have 3 backend web servers called Web1, Web2, Web3. Now if Web1 and Web2 are working properly then everyone who gets connected to them is fine. But if Web3 isn't working properly, then anyone who gets connected to it will see a problem. That would mean that there would be roughly a 1 in 3 chance of getting connected to a "bad" server. Since the load balancer is the thing that decides which of Web1,Web2, or Web3 to send you to, you will never know which one you are getting connected to.

Failover is similar but you might only have 1 server active at a time. As long as "active" or "primary" server is running fine then everyone connects to it. If something happens that the "active" server has to shutdown, then all connections would get re-routed to the "failover" server. If nothing else, this would likely force you to login again.

Now I don't know if there is any load balancing or failover for the MyCRR site so this is a total guess on my part.

Does that help or just make the waters even muddier?

The log-in response seems pretty random to me. My work computer will usually remember me and log me in automatically, but not always (and I miss the ability to have the list of new posts automatically updated each time I access the site). My home computer has taken to logging me in as "guest" (even with the remember me button activated), and I have to log out and then log-in under my username in order to view new posts. My Blackberry is different again.

I realize that the new site is intended to be a step forward, but for me, it has made the forums more difficult to use and a less enjoyable experience.

I think we should change the title of this thread to "Bummed out??"

Splake your explanation does make sense.

It seems to be ongoing at Harlans site which has several versions of the same forum. I can identify at least two and just got switched from one to the other while I was composing a message.. I can tell that the server is different ( and not working properly) as it does not have any posts from today on it and there are posts.

Yeah, when the system didn't even recognize my username last night, I started thinking there is more than 1 server.

The phpBB software uses a database to store everything from posts to user information. That database doesn't necessarily have to be on the same server as the phpBB software. If there are multiple servers being load balanced, then it would be possible for 1 server to be set up to use the wrong database. That would explain you seeing different posts depending on which server you happened to get connected to on the backend.

I didn't get bumped out but it took me several attempts to log in just now. I know I typed the right username and password but I kept getting an error message.

I don't understand what Splake said but I think he's right!

Do you check the Remember Me square? I have to admit that square is mostly off my screen and very faint. Changing the whole log in box to red might help. The print is awfully tiny..changing my font size makes most of the page require scrolling widthwise.
