Is the any online trip route measuring tool or site that one can use to measure potential route options. For planning purposes, to get an estimate of total distance, before committing to purchasing topo maps. Ideally, being able to trace out a route and measure the route distance. It would be great if it could measure the entire trip, say up to several hundred miles.

If you have Garmins Mapsource software with TopoCanada maps, you can create a "track" on your computer screen along your proposed route. Then you can look in the track properties screen where it will tell you how long the track is. You can split individual tracks into two or more tracks as well, and each will display its length.

You can use a very similar approach if you have Ozziexplorer software and NRC maps.

I use both of the above methods for planning all of my trips and find it pretty simple to do. The advantage of the Mapsource method, is that you can add, Waypoints representing portages, rapids, campsites, or whatever, and export the whole works (including tracks) to your GPS to guide you on your trip. (You can also export from Ozzie to your GPS).

cheers

If you are planning in Northern Ontario, you can use www.nomap.ca
It has a measuring tool on it that I find pretty handy.

I play with this fairly often.
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
Originally intended for joggers, it works fine for the rest of us too. It uses google maps.

Then you can use the "measure distance" tool once you're on your selected area.

I don't find the http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/topo/map
and the "measure distance" tool user friendly, when you wish to measure long trips, say 1000 km.

pawistik's suggestion
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
or similar
http://www.treksee.com/
do a better job.

The Bry/ians agree.

I like that Treksee version - hadn't seen that before. It's very easy to use and a bit slicker that the Gmaps pedometer that I linked to, though it doesn't have elevation profile.

They are so much easier to zoom in and out and move over from one section of map to another. You can navigate very quickly. The atlas version does not do that well at all.

Thanks,
Bryan

If you use Google Earth much, then DNR Garmin is a simple and easy program to use http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/tools/arcview/extensions/DNRGarmin/DNRGarmin.html. It lets you convert .kml files to .gpx so you can load them onto your gps or open them in Mapsource. It also lets you load them directly to your Garmin GPS.

Its most useful though if you are familiair with GIS and have acces to ArcMap and data as it lets you convert shapefiles into .gpx files and vise versa.

If you use Google Earth you can download Canadian Topographic Maps here: http://www.gelib.com/natural-resources- ... porama.htm Click on the Blue button "Download with Google Earth"

Then you can use the Google Earth Ruler - Path tool to plot your route.

I've used Ridewithgps.com to map out some river runs. As long as the water shows on the map you can build it.
