View topic - Printable Online Topos?

Hello all,

Planning a big trip and rather than purchase a pile of topos I am interested in possibly printing what I need. There seems to be a lot of different offerings out there.

Wondering if others can recommend good, safe, reliable software.

We have simply bought a CD with all of the topo maps of Manitoba on it and can print any we wish to at any time at home. If you can get this sort of thing I highly recommend it. We got it from the DNR office in Winnipeg, map sales division. It was around $150. I don't know if other provinces have similar things or not.

Mountain Equipment Coop also has topo maps for a reasonable price, full sized. Bulky, but classic. Using them is becoming a lost art.

On a related note, has anyone found an inexpensive inkjet printable waterproof "paper"? I found some options online, but they've been pricey enough to make buying the map seem like a reasonable deal. I also tried printing on some old plastic overhead sheets which printed great, but without a white background the map wasn't very readable.

I crop my maps, print on reguar paper, and then get the sheets laminated at Office Depot. Quite robust and economical but the downside is the pages are not foldable.

I do something similar, and you can fold them. I use clear 'MacTac' and laminate my computer generated printed maps.

Not sure if MacTac is still available, but it's clear plastic with a sticky backing meant to be used as wallpaper.

When I get my topos organized from Toporama, I then send them to Staples via FTP and have them printed on a color laser jet. Costs about $0.50/page. The ink is waterproof, but the paper is not, so I put the days pile in a map case to protect them from dripping paddles, rain etc.

My standard map case is a large Ziploc bag. It's cheap, works well and is easy to replace, but now that it is esy to find online maps for most of the areas I travel I'm wondering if there's a better waterproof option.

The French River PP map comes as a waterproof version and I think the Frontenac PP map is waterproof too. Not sure why the Algonquin PP map is only available as a paper version.

MikeB - there's been some good suggestions already on sources for online topo's. Is there a particular area that you're looking for?
