I've had my 1st Generation SPOT since 2008.
I've used my CC to pay for the subscription. Last year, 2010, my subscription came up and I tried to renew it on SPOT's website with a new CC. The Website's software has" issues" (Spot's customer service words) and I couldn't get my new CC# accepted.
After a few Emails to them and only one response I gave up on the process in frustration. I assumed I no longer had a SPOT subscription and forgot about it.
This past W/E I got this Email from SPOT CS:

Dear Customer,

We are writing to inform you that you have an outstanding unpaid balance with Spot, LLC for service provided for the year 2010. During the week of March 28th, we will attempt to charge your credit card on file for this unpaid amount.

As a valued customer, we are informing you of this matter beforehand and look forward to your continued loyalty. We are committed to offering the industry's best satellite messaging services. Please call SPOT Customer Service at (866) 651-7768 if you have any questions.


I called their CS and found that I owed $112.94 for last year.
I asked for clarification as I assumed I no longer had service.
Their policy is, as this is an emergency device service continues in spite of lack of payment.
No doubt somewhere in the fine print it states I needed to cancel my service.
Short story is I've now cancelled my service with them and they have forgiven the charges.
I still will reactivate my SPOT with tracking, this summer as we're kayaking the East coast of Greenland but still this was PITA.
