Hi,

I am planning a trip on Georgian Bay and have bought the "Small Craft Nautical Chart" for the area. I'd like to make sure I understand what's meant by 'chart datum' and how it applies to what I see on the charts. As I understand it,not only the depths shown but also the outline of the shoreline corresponds to the water level being at chart datum. I have read elsewhere here on CCR about water levels being low on Lake Huron to the point where some of the inside passageways shown on certain maps are no longer navigable. But according to on-line info current levels are slightly above chart datum. So I'm wondering if folks say that some of the inside passageways are dried up, would that just apply to what's shown on topo maps such as the French River park map or would it apply to those shown on the marine charts as well? I realize I am not expressing myself very well here but I guess it boils down to this: is my understanding of chart datum correct or am I missing something?
