Trying to source some 1:50 000 scale topographical maps for this summer's trips:

Does anyone know of a source I can order these on-line?
Actual paper topo maps seem to be getting harder and harder to find...

You have to use the FTP download site, but unless you know the number, it's not much use. Lots of maps available.

I've ordered from FedPubs and they do a great job.

If you want to download and print them out for yourself (or just view them on your computer for route planning purposes), the entire 1:250,000 and 1:50,000 set of topographic maps for Canada are available for free from this official, public, and government FTP resource. Ghost provided a graphical interface link to this source (but I don't find it very easy to use). I'd rather download via a direct link.

Maps are available as both TIFF image or PDF, but you need to have the map reference codes to find your specific map. Happy route planning!

You can download the maps and then print them in large format at any Staples, Kinkos or other copy shops.

The Feds no longer stock or supply pre-printed maps, all map suppliers simply download and custom print which you can probably do yourself for less money especially as it's rare that you need the entire maps.

To print yourself on 8.5" x 11" sheets and maintain the proper scale you should select and print 3000 x 2400 pixel sections.

The link I provided above has a link to the FTP direct download site, but you have to know what map to order. The graphical interphace is a pita, but it works. I download a lot of maps at work. What I do is have a big map of the graphical interface with all the maps laid out on my wall. Saves a lot of time.

If you print your own with a crappy inkjet then yes. The map sellers charge more but will print with higher quality materials. If you only need 8.5 x 11 sections any laser printer with decent paper will give you good results.
