View topic - Backcountry Navigator for Android

I have just bought a new Android phone & have been playing around quite a bit with it. I've found an app called Backcountry Navigator Pro GPS & am wondering if anybody has any experience with it. It uses freely available topos & looks like a useful little app.

There is a Demo which I will play around with & the app itself is about $10 (can't lose too much here!)

I'd love to hear how the app works on your Android. I have an Android and wondered if there were any apps that would work on it for the back country.

I have the Android Pro. Unfortunately, using the GPS kills the battery in just a few hours which really limits its usability in the back country.

This does look like a good app though, given you can load topos and not have to have cell service and data connection like many of the other apps out there.

I tried the Backcountry.com demo app a little - it's a nice little app - can make waypoints, & does a nice job of making a track. I noticed the same problem as Tonycc - that using the GPS runs the battery down extremely fast.

I bought a PowerFilm Solar charger. In the USA $99. The claim is it will charge AA batteries and Any electronics that can connect to it by USB. I tested it on my original addition IPod and it worked. When I got home tried my IPad2 no luck, tried to charge a IPhone no way. I contacted PowerFilm and they said Apples fault. This appears to be correct. It did keep my GPS powered for 10 days using the PowerFilm and 4 rechargeable batteries.

So, maybe this is away to use your phone and charge batteries. I'd hate to see TonyCC get lost. I will test for winter use before Deep Freeze 12.
