A winter portage is one that is covered with snow!

The winter portages in the Frost Area Lands are used for cross-country skiers and possibly snowmobilers. They are pretty easy to find, just follow the tracks or ask the "locals".

The Leslie Frost Centre Map was easy to get your hands on at any outfitter, MEC if you're in a major urban centre. Maybe Richard has them on this site (?).

So a "winter portage" is a trail (covered or not with snow  ) that is used to by-pass a non-frozen, hard ice area in winter....

Thanks for the replies.
I have found a handful of the winter portages but not all.
The snowmobil trails are like highways there, obvious to see.
There are trails to connect the lakes where you might find unsafe ice conditions.( for snowshoes & skis) The Frost center had a map on these but as you know they are shut down...for now.
Would have been nice to get my hands on one.I guess I go scouting a bit.
Boris does not know them either.
