just thought of a potential design for a wood-stove, not sure if anyone's played around with the idea of a cylindrical design as opposed to conventional box..

cylinder shaped stove that can be broken down in to at least 2 pieces. 1 piece connects to the chimney , the other has the stove door (on hinges). 1 half can be smaller than the other so that they can be stacked within each other. top piece would probably need to be flanged . bottom piece as mentioned before will need to have a hinged door for wood loading.

??'s for the experts - esp Dave Hadfield :)
1. since the main stove is not 1 piece, would this design cause a lot smoke build-up? how can this be fixed.
2. what ideal gauge of metal sheet should i use?
3. welding attachments (ie hinges, metal sheet) - what do i need?
4. do i need to have a damper of some sort?

i've never used or built a wood stove for cold-weather camping. planning on changing that this season. so any advice would be welcome.

thanks.

We have one in the shop thats made out of two 50 gallon drumps. The droor is on the end of the bottom on and there is a pipe going to the second one on the other side and then the chimney pipe is on the other side of that drum.

This lets the second drum act as a radiator before the heat leaves through the chimney

Hi Jake

Why not build it in one piece and store the smoke pipes etc. inside of it. You need to put them somewhere. After all, the pipes will be full of soot and inside will be a good place for them. One piece would be lighter and quicker to set up, less hassle trying to put it together in the cold, also less parts to keep track of. One piece would also have less potential for extra air leaks and thus better able to control the draft. You will need a damper in the smoke pipe also unless it's built air tight.

How about building it in a 'U' shape with a flat top for cooking on.

Yes, if you're going to drag it around you might as well be able to cook on it. Preferably 2 pots at once. And, as Canu said, why make them collapseable when they're dirty, and you need a place to put the stovepipe?

I think in Bill Mason's "Song of the Paddle" he shows a stove made from a round film can. I said the same things the first time I saw it.

But I like the way you're thinking! Don't give up! There's always a better mousetrap.

Yeah, I gave you the link to one of Dave's songs. You'll have to roam around on your own after reading the lyrics and the sidebar.
