I have narrowed down my search for COLD weather footwear ..... the type required for warm feet during extended exposure to COLD weather ...... say.. like DF 05 . (yes Santa has been given a hint about booties).

One of my choices uses a velcro strap as a means of making the boot snug to the foot. Your experiences with velcro and cold? ; will cold temperature affect the performance of velcro? Will velcro used in this fashion become a non performer after a period of time?.

cheers and thanks

Ok Moe, my kids have velcro straps on some of their shoes - I didn't see any lack of performance with time, and they they will use these straps sometimes 4 times a day. They kill the shoes before the velcro is dead.
On my NEOS, I have a velcro strap, and either wet or cold, it works.

Also, consider that it is easy to replace or reinforce a velcro strap. Now, hopefully fashion is not an issue .......

What pair do you have in mind .... just a hint for Santa....

One disadvantage of velcro-type fasteners is that snow/ice buildup can hinder good adhesion, especially when the temps are hovering around the freezing mark. Had that problem with an older pair of gaitors.

Ski Doo's high performance shock socks are fastned by velcro and I plan on testing them at 100 mph 8)

Yeah, it's not the cold that messes up velcro, it's the snow. I avoid it for winter gear, prefering strings, or an old fashioned strap and buckle.

I'm a little dubious about fastex buckles at 30 below, too. I remember them not working when I first tried them in winter, though that was a while ago. They broke or they didn't "click" into place. Probably better now.

Moe, my wife( a dressmaker) told me that there is "good" velcro and "crap" velro. My 14 year old MEC rain jacket velcro wrist bands(which i wear in the winter also) still has alot of punch.
Just be sure to test the strength before you buy.

Gents, thanks for the feedback on your experiences they are much valued.

Usually when I make a purchase it takes me 15 seconds to make the decision, but since I hate cold feet with a passion I'm doing considerably more research. I've also had some strange looks when I walk into a shoe store with a couple pairs of sox in my hands....but what the hell ... it's my feet!!

Jean Luc, I'm down to a pair of Sorel's vs Kamik's "Banff'.

cheers and have a great day.
