i'm assuming most winter campers don't bother with hanging their food. when do you usually stop? late fall? middle of winter?

Hi Mettle,

I was wondering the same...a while back.

Take a look at this thread...from the beginning, (it gets a little off-subject as the replies come in):

Still...maybe others can add some more to this concern.

In this area, western New York, bears start denning up by late November. Our bear hunting season is based on allowing the females and cubs to den, but opening the hunt before the rogue males den. I'm sure the bears themselves use both the weather and daylight as an indicator rather than the calendar.

Basically, between mid-December to mid-March, I don't worry about bears. I have never seen bear tracks in the snow. However, if there was a significant thaw taking place I would hang my food even in January. I have seen racoons out and about in the snow on warm days in January

Bears are still sleeping (ZZZZZZZZZ)
The only critter that might be in camp are a few mice and the odd Whiskey Jack.

It is also being said that bears by end of august are too busy to collect all the fruits they need for the winter (so if you camping close to a blueberry field, you may actually increase your chance to encounter a bear) and other type of food, so they are less interested by our bags..... :o
Also if you camp in Algonquin area, racoons are far more busy and pain in the *&* than bears, my experience....

We got a bear last week in our camp - in Abitibi, northern Quebec - while the kids were playing in a tree -under the wind - and when he realized their presence, he just change his course... further chased by our dog (second time we and the dog met a bear during the day) and myself running into the wood with a paddle and a metal chaudron to make noise. It worked...but we (my wife and I) barely slept during the night
