EDIT by Allan Jacobs:

The rock crib may have been the foundation for a log chute so that sawlogs could slide down into deeper water without jamming up at the waterfalls. The river may have had to be dammed above the waterfalls and water diverted into the log chute and the logs would have been carried down with the force of the flow. Loggers with peaveys could have directed the logs into a channel that the river flowed into, towards the log chute... just speculating here.

The above-water structures may have all rotted away, and those parts below water are all that remain. It's known that pines and other logs can remain more or less intact underwater for a long time, because decay rate is far slower... so the logs and rock crib may be all that remains of a more extensive structure that may have been in place at one time.

That has been my thought as well.I just spent the morning associating myself with log chutes,as being from the east it is not something I have been acquainted with at all.

The layout in the pool below would be consistant with a log chute,it allows it to flow right in the deep pool and then free flow on down past black bay.

Are there any other log pieces in Algonquin park you guys have been acquainted with?

Pic of a re constructed chute near Carnarvon.http://www.pbase.com/merriwolf/image/86575585

Shows the need for a crib to stabilize it.

Thanks for the validating my idea.

Thanks FT.

I ran into some issues with having more than one interactive map on a page,no clue why.Put my post limits to 1 per page now all the interactive maps are working.

I'm hoping to have all my old TR's up soon, condensed in the new format of course.

Cheer's
