Hi.
With some excellent help here we are planning a trip to Lac de Gras, then back to Yellowknife in a few weeks.

I am looking for some literature recommendations. Something fiction? A good old trip report? Maybe an interesting historic account or site-specific biological information? Something that might provide another angle to a Northern experience.

Do any of you have 'essential paddling' reading?

I'm thinking of bringing Mowat's Snow Walker. It's got to be something light enough to carry though.

Thanks!
Kelsey

Here's a list of authors from NWT:

Lesley Choyce, Bernice Morgan, Anita Daher, Michael Crummey, Richard Van Camp, Annelies Pool, Jennifer Storm, Jamie Bastedo, Cathy Jewison, Mindy Willett, Patrick Scott, Pat Braden, Tessa Macintosh, Tyler Heal, Walt Humphries, Fran Hurcomb.

I got it from the North Words Festival Website. In terms of fiction, should give you some ideas.

Some others on my list:

- "Arctic Inspired: A Tribute to the Tundra" (Tim Irvin, ed.)
- "The Man Who Ate His Boots: The Tragic History of the Search for the Northwest Passage" (Anthony Brandt)
- "The Magnetic North - Notes From the Arctic Circle" (Sara Wheeler)
- "The Cormorant Hunter's Wife" (poetry, Joan Kane)
- "Rankin Inlet (A Novel)" (Mara Feeney)

The arctic book review blog has some excellent resources:

If you are in an evil mood and one of your companions is easily freaked out....... start reading books on alien abductions. It can be good for days of entertainment!

Pike's Portage would be a good one.
