Well just got back and I have to say it is a place you really should visit. It could take a while to put the trip report together and we had some unique and special experiences. I am now entering in my 42 year of paddling and the experience of paddling amoungs the ice bergs in Twillingate is in the top 5. (it over takes a lot of National championships in both sprint and WW and even a few first decents) I even got a few close up pics of a couple of bergs "changing" (from a safe distance 100m and 250m) and the we were 100m from did take your breath away. We did the boat tour and because the conditions where so great we were able to get into the canoe. I have only fixed a few Puffin pics and the one sunset shot, I shot several 1000 pics and a couple hundered are "keepers" with out really trying. Link to Newfoundland album. https://picasaweb.google.com/1142241160 ... directlink Jeff |

Have been there 3 times for a total of 9 weeks. Twillingate is a beautiful place. The coastal people of NF and Labrador are just so nice. If I had the cash I'd buy a summer home there. GG |

Jeff the link is a dead end.. We went to Newfoundland in 2010 with canoe in hand and stayed in Twilingate but never paddled. We will go back in 2015 with kayaks. We only "did " the western half of the island. This time we will go through Labrador and down to Corner Brook and exit at Argentia. |

The link leads to the most recent Webshot. I don't think Jeff went to Micronesia Palau when he went to NL. Please explain how, Barbara, you got the NL picture. |

I clicked the link in Jeff's original post. I added the url tags so it wouldn't parse: https://picasaweb.google.com/114224116055024928868/NewFoundland?authuser=0&feat=directlink Just tried it again, and it worked fine again. I see now...there's a different link in later posts. Barbara |

AAh.. OK. Now I recall Webshots changed their format a year or so ago and made people furious. That worked! We went there in 2010 but I don't recall any fossils.. We are going back in 2015 to continue to try to get to St John.. Jeff where did you find the fossils? Tablelands? |

I should have changed the link in the other posts too..... Fossils where at Future Unesco site "Mistaken Point" http://www.env.gov.nl.ca/env/parks/wer/r_mpe/ You need to pre-book your guided tour they have only so many spots. And it is way out of the way. When we went is was just donations no charge. And they will drive you in with their vans. You need to wear special little booties to walk on the fossils. Come prepared to hike, it is about a 45 minute hike into the fossils. The road in can be very rough, but it is also worth the drive down to the Cape Race Light house. Free camping (no services, water or electricity) at Chance Cove Provincial park, out houses were I little to be desired, rough road in from the high way, if the seas are calm you should be able to get a paddle in. Very little in accommodation in the area B & B's can be pricey but they are nice. From other areas it is long but very scenic drive. Did I say the roads are rough..... Buy very worth it. Jeff And we had a great sleep at Chance cove listening to the surf. But Like everywhere else on the rock, it can be very cool. Edit ps And if you are thinking of going, it is a beautiful place, tons to do. But it is a huge area and if you are only going for a week plan to stick to a certain area of your own high priorities. Because you won't be disappointed! Don't be afraid to ask. the one thing for sure is you are taking the ferry in peak season you need to book early (just after Christmas) the same if you plan to rent cars or rv's |

Last time we booked the ferry in 2010 we booked in May for an August crossing. We took three weeks to visit western Newfoundland and only got as far east as Gander. We left on the same ferry.. Channel Port Aux Basques. I'm looking for sea routes that are sheltered for kayaks. Nothing at all alas is showing up in canoe routes. This time we may take the ferry to Argentia so we get to the Avalon Peninsula. Expect another three week visit. We did have blackflies in Burgeo in August. |

A lot depends if you want a private sleeper on the ferry or not. First time we where too late for anything going over to Port Aux Basques, and just a dorm coming back from Argentia. My wife has sleep apnea so it was a problem. 2 time had private berths both directions (took night ferries ) They are well worth it for a good sleep. The Argentia ferry depending on weather can be over 19 hours (21 hrs first time) Jeff |
