I just got Laurel's Volume 1.
It covers the following 8 rivers:
Omineca River
Kispiox River
Taku River
Jennings River
Dease River
Gataga/Kechika Rivers
Netson Creek / Rabbit River
Fort Nelson / Liard Rivers
most of which I have never heard of.

If you know her book on Northern SK Canoe Routes, you know what to expect and in fact you have likely already ordered it if you intend to paddle in BC; you need read no farther.

If not, here are section headings for a typical river
Introduction (with Route map)
Length
Topos and other maps
Access and egress
When to go (with chart of monthly mean flows)
Difficulty of the river
Character of the river and region
Local history
Level of solitude
Wildlife
Fishing
Camping, hiking and other activities
Special Equipment
Trip notes: map numbers, grid references, access and egress points, campsites, hazards, rapids and their difficulty, cabins and lodges, lunch spots and other stuff.

The book concludes with
an 8-page directory of services and organizations (with contact information),
a 7-page bibliography,
Appendix A: Scale of rapids classification,
Appendix B: Low-impact camping,
and a 6-page place index.

I can't think of anything else I would want to know.
And it is all beautifully written.

A one-line summary:
What a magnificent contribution to the paddling literature!

Thanks, Allan, for your very kind words. You will have some old friends in volume two coming out November 2009: Upper Stikine and Lower Stikine routes, along with the the Spatsizi and Tatshenshini/Alsek, as well as some new river routes to most people, the Turnagain/ Kechika, Toad/ Liard and Tuchodi/ Muskwa....so many rivers, so little time!

I am happy to answer questions on any of the routes in the two volumes in this forum, by the way, and eventually find the time to outline them for the routes forum, I hope.

Laurel
