Hello All

So now we have canoe 17 1/2 Clipper Tripper and and appropriate safety gear,we also have a canoe cart .We have had a day of lessons on the water. So this past summer we put our canoe in the water in the Harrison River, Birkenhead Lake, Green Lake and we want to do a week long trip this spring. We are campers, hikers so the camping part is not a problem. We are thinking of going mid June to do the Bowron Lake Route . Is this a good time of the year for the trip ? We will have other questions but will start with this one .

Thanks

If you do some weather research you might find June to be a wet month on average. May is drier. You should miss the hordes (of people) in June.
Best time. Late September. No bugs. Less people. Autumn colours. Bears if you are lucky. But anytime is a good time for the Bowron. Just a matter of priorities.
Have fun.

Any time to paddle Bowron is great and I'd suggest September too but perhaps not late September unless you are set on that time of year. We did last 10 days of the season this year- September 21 to 30 in a 17' Hellman Prospector- and would aim for earlier in month next time.

The plusses: no bugs; few people so not fighting over campsites/ portage boxes; snow capped mountains; BLUEBERRIES!!!;portage trails (potentially) dried out/ recovered from summer activity.
The minusses: cold- typically waking up to 1-5degree temperatures, nice in sleeping bag, not so much fun until you get a good fire going; shorter paddling days; foggy/misty mornings until about 930am; depleted wood supply; little wildlife other than flocks of migrating ducks and geese.

As you are in Cariboo Mountains, mostly conifer covered hills so not much in way of colours in the trees. And many leaves were down by time we started. ( if you want colours paddle Quetico or Algonquin in September!)

Keep in mind you are swimming in glacier fed lakes rivers any time but a dip in the lake when it is only 5 degrees out is refreshing!

Enjoy!
Bruce

Bowron is nice for someone just getting their feet wet in canoe tripping. June is wet and buggy. My favorite time(I first did it in 1971 last time in 2009) is late September to first week of October. Most locals do it then because you avoid the crowds. You might find some ice here and there, but the weather can often be spectacular with icicles on the falls, no bugs and no fees.
