I'm guessing it was about 9 years ago then. I know I was there in '04 and they had the road fixed up good. Before that it was in terrible repair. One girl with us brought in a Toyota Corolla with no trouble. Even in subsequent trips, the road was fine. Just take it easy and any vehicle will make it. The sides of the road are definitely precipitous in many places.

kayakwriter, I did the route last in 2006 and I found the road in great shape. It is rough in places, and there is always the odd washout that has been quickly repaired, so a high clearance(or short and narrow low clearance) vehicle is a plus. My family car has survived it, you just have to be willing to take your time getting in. Carts work on this route, though I have carried a light kevlar boat in without any trouble.

What they said.
The road was great when we were there and they were also working on it at that time.

We drive a Rav4.

Thanks, everybody! [/Dr. Nick Riviera voice]

You were right about the time of my last visit. When I looked up my slides (remember slides?, pre digital) it was ten years since my last Murtle visit. Time flies.

Glad to hear the road's family car doable. I want to take my wife on a trip there this summer or next.
