Was happy to find the campsite at Lois Lake was free and devoid of noisy campers when I showed up there the night before casting off. Got my first strokes in the next morning by 0630 under clear skies and winds under 5 knots. The first portage was so good a person in a wheelchair could have managed it which was encouraging because I was using my new (first) portage cart on this trip. Long story short: the portages get progressively rougher, narrower and longer as you go along. The final portage down to Goat/Powell lake is the worst with sharp winding corners. Pathway is too narrow for a canoe cart to be anything but a hindrance and I kept crossing a logging road during said portage. Well after all the toil of the portage trail I thought I'd take to the logging road figuring it would be easier...nope. Turns out I signed myself up for a bit of a waterless death march. Several extra kilometers of walking eventually lead me down to the water on Powell Lake. It was such a tedious slog I was daydreaming of the relatively easy portage trail. If I were to do the trip again I would definitely go with a portage yoke and make sure all my stuff fit neatly into a single portage pack.

Ironically the highlight of the trip came when four douchebags in rented canoes showed up at my campsite and proceeded to take three hours to cook dinner while shouting constantly the most inane drivel. I finally decided I'd rather risk drowning while paddling at night than have to listen to these chavs so off I went as nautical twilight faded to moonlight and then starlight. A nap on some rocks about 6 kms from the south end of the lake and a much dreamed of clubhouse sandwich at the bar at the take out was a nice way to end the trip. I didn't even have to walk back to Lois Lake after because someone gave me a lift.

Beautiful scenery but definitely a trip to pack light on.
