July 1-3 2016. This is the third year in a row that I have paddled this section of the Murray River with the Grande Prairie Canoe Club. This year we went a little further down from where we used to take out. Total trip kms was about 119 kms. The put in was at the Tumbler Ridge/Murray River boat launch on hiway 29 just outside of Tumbler. The take out was a nice little boat launch just upstream on the Pine River where the Murray meets up with the Pine. Had to get up stream a bit and it seems easiest on the left shore going up the Pine. Then ferry across in front of a little island with log jamming to the boat launch. To get to the take out turn south off hiway 97 on the west side of the Pine River and follow the road down to the boat launch. Harvey says the flow was at 276 cm/s when we started and 213 when we got done. So I'll just call it an average of 245 cm/s. The Murray seemed tamer this year than the last. It was a good run. The weather was decent. Had a little rain on the first day and a little rain in the night on the second night. Seen elk, deer, bear, and a lot more on this journey. I will attach a 10 minute video that I made using a hat cam. The video is pretty much experimental with recording footage and editing, but it should give some idea of the Murray River. Hope you enjoy. Here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yc37_eREx4M

Wow there's a lot of churn to that river. Nice footage. Were there any calm sections?

There are a lot of calm sections. Practically the first day(24 kms) is pretty calm, and most of the the rougher water that I was in could be totally avoided. The third day has the most challenges. There is a whirlpool just after the 24 km area. It is something we faced first thing on day 2. It can be ugly, but it can also be lined on river right. Everyone ran it, but I myself took shallower water on the right and ended up lining just a little. Harvey and I almost went in it 3 years ago, and it is a crappy feeling. lol.

Looks like a very nice trip and not too far away. Another for the list...
What is the river like between your take-out and the Peace River?
Thanks for posting.

Hey Ralph, I have never done that section of the Pine yet. It has been on our list of things to do for the last to years, but each year we ended up doing something different because the water level was to low. It is on our schedule for July 30-Aug 1 this year and it won't surprise me that it will be too low again. The club has done it in the past though, and I have been told that there is nothing to really be concerned about. Nice easy and scenic paddle I guess.
