Asb 1959,have you checked out the routes section of this site? You can find Eels creek in the central Ontario map. Kevin Callan also touches on it in one of his guide books.I cannot recall the name of the book at this time.

I can not comment on the whole creek because I hav`nt done the full lenght. But I can shed some light on a small section along hwy#28. The section in which I`m referring to ends at the small rest/lunch area at the hwy. The put-in is about 10kms up stream where the creek comes along side the hwy and you can see rapids. This creek is a spring run with a small window to paddle. Or if you plan to carry these rapids, then you would have a bigger paddling window. I would class this section, a class II/IV, so GOOD moving water skills would be need for this section.

the usual Eels Creek paddle is from the wooden bridge (doesn't look like a wooden bridge when you drive over it!!) at Haultain on Highway 28 to Stoney Lake. There is a small parking area on the south side of the road east of the creek. There are a few sets of rapids that are easily portaged, but can be easily run, depending on water levels. High Falls is a definite portage but not an overly long one. This section is about a 4 hour paddle and there is a nice take out and parking area near Stoney Lake
The entire creek from Eels lake to Stoney Lake can be done, but in spring with lots of water flowing.

And where do you shuttle to?

Any idea what water levels are like right now?

I think you'd like to Lower Mad. as well. 1 hr north of Bancroft so a little further but you can also run it in 1 day or twice in a weekend.

See Kevin Callen's book Cottage Country canoe route's. I have done this trip many times from Haultain which is south of Apsely. You cannot do the longer trip in the fall. You'll end up dragging for miles. I can be quite fun in the spring and the "Creekers" seem to like it.

The regular run is very pretty and once around the first bend you feel like you are 100 miles from human kind. There are a couple of pull overs 2 short portages aheadof High Falls which is steep but not too long and sometime a short lift over and the base of the pond outlet below high falls. drive one car to the end point and a second to the start point. Not too many places to arrange a shuttle

as suggested view the routes forum or search on Eels Creek for other entries

i paddled this stretch of creek from the haultain put in to the take out at the "park" a little over a month ago.

nice little paddle. not the best for an overnight trip as it is quite short but nice none the less.

I think it took me a little over 3.5 hours to paddle it and ride my bike back to the jeep on hwy 28. That includes double trip portages as i was carrying my mountain bike.
Great spot for some exercise. paddling and cycling....2 of my most favorite things.

Also in the same general area is the Crow River. You can paddle from the Gut Conservation Area to the bridge north of havelock in a 1.5 days. Do your shuttle Friday night, Paddle Sat & half of Sunday. Not a busy river at all......

I am hoping to paddle Eels creek this weekend- in doing a bit of pre-research on the put in point at the brige on #28 I came across this:

There is a small parking area on the south side of the road east of the creek.

Looking at my map- the road runs North/South...so how can the parking area be on the south?, and I am also confused about the "east" of the creek.

I thought I recall a roadway, or a dump or something to the south of the bridge- but I don't know if its private or o.k. to park there.

Can anyone shed some light on best places to park at the put in point. I have heard rumors of "screaming ladies" from the west side of the highway :).
I don't want to go further north to the park as the paddling from that location to the #28 bridge is rumored to be tricky.

Thanks!

At the bridge, the road is north/south, the flow of the creek is approx. from west to east, and the 2-car parking spot is on the eastern side of the road and on river right, immediately beside the bridge....

The large areas on the west side of the highway are private (house beside the river and the commercial dirt area north of it) and last time I was there, parking was not welcome. I did ask and I could tell they had gotten tired of strangers showing up and just parking there or worse. There might be something further if you drive down that road leading W.

Otherwise, less than 1km to the north, on the east side of Hwy28 is a driveway and a parking spot used by X-skiers in winter. That might work. Some of the Peterborough folks posting here might know more....

We did this section about a decade ago. We parked and put in at some private place just N and turn left. He charged a couple of $ for parking. Cannot recall exact details but it was 1 or 2 driveways N of the bridge.

Paddled Eels creek yesterday. The water was pretty low, but managable if you were wary of rocks. I think there are a few new scratches on the bottom though :)
Was able to park on the east side of the highway at the bridge put in, good thing we were only one car as there isn't much room (another car was already there).

did notice no parking signs on the road directly across from the put in, and the spot I thought might work as an alternative is the dump- also no parking signs posted.

My wife and I did a day trip down the lower section of Eels Creek a short while ago. What an excellent day out to get some local exercise. Here's a trip report of the day:

Nice trip, I would have been a bit reluctant to use a kevlar canoe on the route you completed.
I kind of regret selling my Royalite canoe years ago.
