2 questions, actually:

1) is it a big deal to get the BUD car to drop you off at the FORKS on the Spanish River?

and

2) Are dogs allowed on the "Bud" car?

Planning a trip for late August.

Thanks

Unless things have changed, you can request a stop at any mile you want.

You can get the train to stop anywhere on the way in. As long as the conductors can see you waiting beside the track they will pick you up anywhere along the tracks. Dogs are allowed but you have to have it caged and they cost you a adult fare.

The adult fare I can handle, but the cage?

Hopefully they supply one. I'd hate to portage a dog cage over the Graveyard Rapids! (unless I just stuffed my wily pooch in a food barrell. hmmm. )

Having your dog crated may be the "official" policy, but I've never seen a dog crated in the baggage car when I've been on it - summer or winter.

As long as your dog is well-behaved and on a leash, you're not going to need a crate. We showed up with someone with a dog and a crate once and the train staff told him just to put the crate back in his car.

There have been dogs on the Bud Car every time I have ever been on it - many people use this train service to access their cottages on Pogamasing etc...

I've yet to see a dog in a cage.

They will likely request you ride with the dog in the baggage car (but hey - that's where everyone hangs out to drink beer!)
More interesting than in the passsenger car anyway...

That's great to know - thanks for the quick replies.

They serve beer on the train? Or bring your own? That's good to know, too. My dog is a bit of a lush...

No ... there's no food or beverage service. However, it has happened on occasion that a can has inaverdently jumped out of my cooler and landed in my hand.

You guys are making me nostalgic. The bud car was one of the highlights of my Spanish River trip twenty years ago. Nice to hear that it hasn't changed.

If the dogs were in cages, they would not be able to pull the train during the winter.

Please note - Call VIA and reserve for passengers and canoes. Get a reservation # and tell them your drop off point. That way your canoes are garanteed to get on. I have seen too many parties show up, and not everyone always gets on ! There is only so much room on that train.
If you have a case (s) of beer, put them in a box or packsack. They might charge extra.
Its funny how a mixed drink or can just happens to appear in your hand. Keep it discreet.

You dont always have to Portage Graveyard rapids. Do a short carry over and then get back in and enjoy the ride !

Which Graveyard are you talking about?

I portaged the first, Little Graveyard, for when I was there (Aug 03) it was an impassable, nasty froth, no good for even the hardiest, most indestructible kayakers.

The Big Graveyard, however, proved runnable, albeit with a VERY SCARY run down the left side drop into the pool of water below it.

The Cascades, the most harmless looking of the section, is the one that nearly got us. Flipped the boat and bent the heck out of it (Royalex), and gave me the willies the rest of the trip...
