OK, just to close off this thread, the official ice-off date on Lake Opeongo was May 10th ... same as last year.

The scientific prediction is May 3, 2020 with a margin of error of 14 days plus or minus. ;-)

I'm wondering about this year now. It's been a dastardly short maple syrup season in Southern Ontario. I'm already seeing flies buzzing about here in Brampton. I fly over southern Ontario frequently and the lakes down here are definitely starting to break up. I have a feeling ice out will be early this year.

Can anyone report on ice conditions in the cottage country / Parry Sound / Haliburton Highlands area?

March is evil. It will give you a taste and then drop 20 degrees with a foot of snow. My sister's birthday is mid-April and I don't trust the weather until then. There's also a British saying "never cast a clout till May is out."

Same question every year that can be answered by just looking at the various Webcams sprinkled through the area that are looking over the water at various lakes

I’ve seen some recent pictures of Georgian Bay near Parry Sound, about a meter a meter of open water along the shores but still a long way to go beyond that. No idea about the smaller lakes though.

Even on a crappy day like today being overcast and rainy there's plenty of definition in the webcams when viewed at full screen to make out the water quite well , you don't have to be up at 9am or only when it's sunny since the webcams will show recorded images of the last 24 hours :D

This morning looking into Georgian Bay at PaB lookout (Pointe au Baril) you can clearly see
that there's too much ice for canoes and not enough to walk on
Image
Much larger image , and at full screen even larger when viewed online
https://images2.imgbox.com/fb/3f/C8iMH8Bn_o.jpg

Inland at Baysville just south of AP the're still some large chunks of ice floating
around which means that the smaller lakes are still covered in ice
Image

Of course the next few days being sunny will have better images to look at

These are tools that have been implemented a long time ago and are useful
to view road conditions on an hourly basis as one travels throughout the north
part of Ontario both in winter and summer

Cheers ......... Vin

Ice is already mostly gone on Lake Muskoka. Algonquin will be ice free in 2 weeks

I flew from the Toronto Island airport to Muskoka and Peterborough and back yesterday. The ice is still on Couchiching Lake, but is off most of the lakes in/around Queen Elizabeth Wildlands, and it looks like the ice is off Chemong and Pigeon lakes around Bobcaygeon. I didn't get a very good look at Simcoe.

Thx---it looks like some of Algon is open now. I didn't know that Zoom
posted daily pix. I had been using EOSDIS

The link I gave is using the "HD Layer", it gives an AM or PM view. There is also a "live" layer, lower resolution but you can scroll through in 10 minute increments.

https://zoom.earth/#view=45.7426,-78.64 ... labels:off

Don't bother scrolling through from where this link takes you, it's been cloudy ever since! There is a good chance that Friday afternoon will the next good view.

I use EOSDIS as well but I'm finding Zoom is always an open tab in my browser.
