I just did the same flight, from Toronto to Muskoka to Peterborough and back. I didn't see any ice or snow anywhere. The route took me over QEW II Wildlands and then Chemong and Pigeon lakes around Peterborough, over Fenelon Falls. The ice is gone from Couchiching and Simcoe. Cranberry and Balsam lakes were major waypoints, and both of those were completely ice free as well. I can confidently say the Trent-Severn is ice free at this time.

I'm learning to fly if anyone's wondering, and just now at the solo cross country stage of training. I'm asking my instructor to authorize me to take a detour over the south end of Algonquin when I fly from Muskoka to Peterborough the next time I fly, hopefully I'll be able to report back with that.

That is a different issue that I don't see as a prob. When I zoom in I can see a clear summertime pic in which I can identify an area or lake, then zoom out to see a current pic. It's the other issue that threw me for a loop and I find irksome i.e. showing some sort of default pic until they load up today's pic. There's enough 'fake news' everywhere else on the internet. I don't need it on the sat pix. :( (BTW---the ice is all gone in Algon again right now----prob ice up this aft!! :o )

Thanks! I like their comparisons to other years with ice out dates as well... based on my completely unscientific assessment, It looks like we are on track for an early-is ice out date this year.

I am pretty sure I am seeing this other bug right now. It nearly fooled me yesterday as well! Looked like there was an epic melt overnight with all of Algonquin pretty much ice-out. Check back later and it shows the "proper" image.

Looks like Opeongo is really breaking up today. I imagine official ice out will be announced tomorrow. Lots of ice free lakes in the park now.

Yes, the 3rd earliest ice out date on record.

Some other trivia:
- It's been 9 years since the last early April ice out.
- Also somewhat surprisingly there were more May ice out dates (5) in the last 10 years than there had been in a 10 year period for the previous 3 decades.

Does anyone know if the Road out to Brain lake is open/driveable with a pickup?

Unlikely, even going back to the year ice was out in March the black flies were only about a week ahead of normal. It all depends on what the weather is like between now and opener.

I hope you're right! My late-April trip has been pushed back to early/mid-May and I was worried that the dreaded black flies would be coming in early this year due to the early thaw. Would be great if I can still get out ahead of them.
