We just 8/10/16 ran into a problem with the route description (on a popular route map of the Spanish) of the Snake R cross-over between the West and East branches. To do it in a new way we wanted to crossover from West to East using the Snake R going down stream on it. However, at the very 1st short steep rapid we came to a screeching halt. Though the Spanish had plenty of water, the Snake was low and very bony with no easy way down. So we spent 2 hrs looking for a trail on either side. None exists. Can't speak of the next rapid nor of the longer rapid into the East branch. We turned around and continued down the West branch. Does anyone know if we just screwed up and should have tried to wade down or is there a portage trail somewhere ? And what about the next rapid down the Snake ?

Did the crossover in mid July 2016 and waded/dragged the boat through the very shallow and rocky stream, only 100m or so. If the boat was a light weight kevlar I would have portaged along the exposed river bed shoulders. The ~600m portage into First Lake is signed and in very good shape.

My partner has l;eg issues making wading on rocks very dangerous. Plus we were afraid we might have to retrace our steps up stream if the next portages got worse. Thanks for your comments.

You don't need a signature, or you could put in something about you or fun.
