The Port Loring Loop is a 46km crown land canoe route near, you guessed it, Port Loring Ontario This small town off Highway 522 is Northeast of Noganosh Provincial Park and it's possible to connect route for a longer trip. Parts of this loop are seldom traveled, so it makes for a great adventure off the beaten path.

Leaving from the launch on Le Grou Lake, we made our way down the Pickerel River. Scenic but shallow. Being August, water levels were low so we had to portage in stream through some boney sets of rapids.

A few ATV trail portages has us skirting some small but impressive chutes and we were soon in cottage country on Wauqimakog and Toad Lakes. You could start on these lakes and leave the majority of cottage country traffic to the end of your trip, but we found boat traffic to be fairly minimal.

A series of snowmobile/ATV trails connects Aruthur, Bass, Clear, Long and Otter Lakes. There are some great campsites on these backlakes and rumour has it the bass fishing is top notch. We looped back to Le Grou via Dog creek, a narrow and winding stream with numerous beaver dams. As you paddle the final 250m to where it enters Dog Lake, it becomes constricted with alders and weeds. Some slogging is required but it's passable by a canoe.

It's a crown land route. Nothing official. Was never part of a pamphlet or maintained route. We tend to paddle a lot of these and just name it after a prominent area/lake/river etc. There were some details in the LIO trail layer and the Backroad mapbook (who source the LIO layer... hence the bad quality data), the rest was all ortho interpretation and topo reading. You can likely nix dog Creek and the Pickerel River by portaging out of Long into Mud and Duck Lakes.

I attempted part of this loop, last October, 2019. Starting in LeGrou Lake, we portaged to Pup Lake, Then Little Hungry, Big Hungry and Dog Lake. After a difficult search for the mouth of Dog Creek, we dragged the canoe through the jumble of brush blocking the mouth then managed to paddle up the creek a mile or so, lifting over, possibly 5, beaver dams. We eventually ran out of water, due to collapsed/washed-out beaver dams. This left us stuck in the middle of the big meadows in ankle-deep water. I walked a couple of hundred yards further with no sign of any improvement in the water situation. Portaging across the meadows didn't seem like an option as the huge grass hummocks, made even walking while carrying nothing very difficult. We turned back and camped on Dog Lake. We did a hike from Dog Lake north to West Deer Lake along ATV trails and back again. Very pretty in the Fall back there.
