We were getting close to a portage when we saw this bear.
I couldn't believe my eyes but my friend urged me to take some pictures.

This is the result:

When was this? Did it seem aggressive / social?

About 5 years ago. The bear was at the portage and he started walking away when we approached. It was a normal reaction.
But it was a big one, I wouldn't have liked to meet him on the trail. To me it was an encounter.

I would call that a sighting. I saw a bear on the trail in Chiniguchi too and it left the trail and all I got was a hind end shot ..and not paying attention I stepped in bear spoor.

From spring till late fall we have bears crossing our yard at least once a week foraging for berries that grow everywhere
With a thermal monocular we also see them at night at the edge of our yard along with wolves
and a bunch of other critters that roam around in the dark
No big deal if you live in the middle of nowhere in the north :)
