Brian,
You didn't say where you were headed in AB though you seem to be indicating Edmonton area.
Yes, start with a copy of Marks Guide and then maybe reach out to Mark Lund through Ceyana Canoe Club in Edmonton. ( there are at least 3 canoe/ paddling clubs in Edmonton- check out Paddle Alberta for a listing of the clubs and contacts). Ceyana offers paddling classes, access to various boats at the Rundle Park paddling centre and Voyageur canoe training on the N. Saskatchewan in downtown Edmonton. Good people!
Yes, you are going to have to go much further afield to find Algonquin style loops, like northern Saskatchewan, Yukon, or BC, though Churchill River, Wells Gray, Nahanni and Bowron are very different experiences. Lakelands is a loop but you've been spoiled paddling Algonquin. As you note, most western paddlers play in moving water rather than tripping. Lots of opportunity for that in the Mountain rivers- North Saskatchewan River Nordegg to Rocky Mountain House is only a couple of hours from Edmonton, has lots of access and remote camping spots.
Enjoy!
Bruce
thank you for the info - will be sure to check it out (and yes sir - somewhere around Edmonton area)
