looking forward to moving back to Alberta this year (born and raised in ON, worked 5 years in AB abour 10 years ago) our kids stayed and are starting families of their own now so we'd like to be there for that.
Will pickup a copy of Mark's paddling guide as that is the advice most given to start. I'm used to flat water lake travel / Algonquin type loops which seem to be hard to come by (Lakeland) so will be looking to learn a bit more about river travel I guess! Also booked a NSR day paddle to get the feel for it through Edmonton Canoe.
Also have done hammock camping but I know that may be difficiult in some areas unless hiking - but you-tube's "Camping with Steve" is a wealth of knowledge on that front as well. haha!!
Will be sure and ask if I cannot find browing through the forums.
Brian

Brian,
You didn't say where you were headed in AB though you seem to be indicating Edmonton area.
Yes, start with a copy of Marks Guide and then maybe reach out to Mark Lund through Ceyana Canoe Club in Edmonton. ( there are at least 3 canoe/ paddling clubs in Edmonton- check out Paddle Alberta for a listing of the clubs and contacts). Ceyana offers paddling classes, access to various boats at the Rundle Park paddling centre and Voyageur canoe training on the N. Saskatchewan in downtown Edmonton. Good people!
Yes, you are going to have to go much further afield to find Algonquin style loops, like northern Saskatchewan, Yukon, or BC, though Churchill River, Wells Gray, Nahanni and Bowron are very different experiences. Lakelands is a loop but you've been spoiled paddling Algonquin. As you note, most western paddlers play in moving water rather than tripping. Lots of opportunity for that in the Mountain rivers- North Saskatchewan River Nordegg to Rocky Mountain House is only a couple of hours from Edmonton, has lots of access and remote camping spots.
Enjoy!
Bruce
