Post subject:  Lakeland Canoe Circuit?

Hi folks,

This was going to a Private Message to Ralph, but I figured information gleaned would serve the larger paddling community so I'm going public with my question instead.

I have a canoe tripping friend that asked me if I knew anything about the Lakeland Provincial Park Canoe Circuit. I don't, but figured you likely did or knew where to find more information. Thus far I haven't found any trip reports on MyCCR and my googling has not turned up much of use.

So, what's the area like? What is the quality of wilderness? Is one likely to find "solitude"? How would the trip compare to a northern Sask family-oriented trip such as the MacLennan Lakes area, for instance?

The family in question are experienced paddlers. Our families have done a couple of trips together and the fellow who emailed me and I have been tripping together for a decade (he's 1/4 of the infamous Northstar Expeditions). Despite his refusal to follow me backwards down a CII/III rapid last fall, he still is a fair paddler (not half as good as he claims to be but at least twice as good as I'll give him credit for).

Cheers,
Bryan

I found a good PDF map of the area in my research. My son did the trip with a school group earlier this spring, but to be honest his trip report is more about campfire stories than the canoeing.

I am going with a family group in early Aug so I have been doing some research as well. I just saved all the PDF files, and may not have the URL of where I found them. I used the map with camp site locations, and then google maps to make a table of GPS coords for the campsites, and the portage trail ends. I plan to verify the accuracy of this method on my trip.

From the sounds of my son´s experience, it is all lake, flat water. There is no flowing water. He also commented that the camp sites they picked were rather "swampy".

I'll be happy to monitor this thread for more info too.

Thanks Al, I had missed that.
The photo report by Darin gave an idea of the terrain and was more informative than the other information I had come across thus far.
Cheers,
Bryan

I believe that Mark Lund in his Alberta guide has provided a section for the Lakeland canoe circuit. Worthwhile checking that out before you go.

regards
dave

Hi, Bryan,
I've been away. This trip is on my "should do it someday" list but I haven't done it yet.
You may have found this or been referred to these already but...

Mark Lund's book has 3 pages about this circuit.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Ralph,
I should pick up Lund's book just as a matter of principle.
