Moved to Cold Lake last year and have done a few adventures so far on area rivers. One trip down the Beaver River which was a nice family paddle, and another down the Cold River which will not be happening again any time soon!!!!
Looking for some info on the other rivers in the area. I'm thinking of a couple trips on the Sand River and perhaps the Martineau river. I have found some limited info on these rivers on the site here.
Has anyone on here paddled these rivers? when is a good time of year to do so?
Thanks

If a whitewater day trip is of interest, the Makwa River can be a lot of fun during spring run-off. I've only done it once and I was with a few locals from Meadow Lake. We launched at the bridge where Hwy 55 crosses the river and took out closer to it's confluence with the Beaver River. I'm not sure I've got the take-out spot that we used correct in the links below.
Launch: http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.p ... &z=13&t=t2
Possible take=out? http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.p ... 7&z=15&t=s

Some info on the Makwa can be found here: http://www.wildpaddler.ca/p/spring-creek-info.html - Note that I put in farther upriver than they did and I'm not sure that the take out was the same either.

Cheers,
Bryan

Hi Simmered,

I'm going to be in the Cold Lake area later this summer, and I'm wondering if you've been able to find any other good paddling spots in the area?

Where did you start and end when you did the Beaver River? I was thinking of starting north of Bonnyville (off Highway 41) and ending north of Ardmore (off Highway 892). Do you know if that is a good route?

Thanks

A couple of weeks ago I did 2 day trips on the Waterhen from Lac Des Isles to the take out along the Waterhen River Road. It was a great ~4 hours with lots of Class 1 & 1+ (maybe an easy C2). It's a great "Intro to Whitewater" river and fun to play in. The first day I took my wife's cousin and her husband down the river on a reconaissance mission. The 2nd day my wife & I took our kids, the fellow from the day before, and a couple more family members down the river. Our takeout was exactly here: http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.p ... 7&z=16&t=h

We started at the Clearwater Canoeing launch which is along the gravel road to the north of the Waterhen, NW of Goodsoil, SK. http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.p ... 7&z=16&t=h

One could also easily start at the bridge north of Goodsoil at the Meadow Lake Provincial Park gate (without actually entering the park).

A full day-trip report will be posted hopefully sometime soon.

Cheers,
Bryan

By the way, this section of river was billed as C1 to C2. I suspect with the water down a bit there would have been a lot more rocks to dodge.
