I'm looking for a quiet, beautiful spot for two senior citizens to stay and canoe this fall, for up to a week, on a lake or calm river in the general area of southern BC or Alberta. We have our own canoe, and I'm sure my wife would prefer a small lodge rather than camping out. We haven't yet traveled in Alberta, so it will all be new to us. Suggestions will be much appreciated.

One thought is to arrange to stay in Field, B.C., in Yoho National Park. You can use this accomodation location as a base camp for unbelievable day trips for canoe.

You can do day trips to any of the following:

Emerald Lake in Yoho Park;

Columbia River between Fairmont Hotsprings and Radium Hotsprings;

Lake Louise in Banff;

Moraine Lake in Banff;

Bow Lake and Hector Lake on the Icefields Parkway;

Vermillion Lakes near Banff townsite.

While several of these water bodies are highlights of the Canadian Rockies, there are many more secluded choices also at hand. You can pick and choose as the weather and inclination dictate.

I'd recommend you look seriously at the Slocan Lake area of the West Kootenays. It's off the beaten tourist track and has clear water, great beaches, cliffs, relatively warm water for swimming, good hiking and friendly people. You can find B&B's or hotels in Silverton, New Denver and Roseberry. It's also really nice not far away at Kaslo on Kootenay Lake.

Sludge and Crek-

Thanks for the fine ideas. With luck we'll experience them all.
