Hi dunkin' !!
Great stuff!
Is your Hellman Duratuff or Duralite layup. I notice you have black aluminum gunwales.

Mine and the one we rented is Duralite. My canoe has wood gunwales, the one we rented had aluminum. I really like the wood, but the maintenance is quite a bit more. However, when Monster and Ken dumped Ken grabbed the gunwale to hold the canoe and put a good kink iin it. I guess the wood would have either held with some flex or just snap.

Fabulous photos lads!

P.S. I think robust wood (ash) gunwales, in the long run, are superior!

IWe're doing this trip this coming labour day -- does anyone know what the water levels are like? Will it be a problem?

Water levels fluctuate. The bighorn dam is just upstream. There's no telling what the levels will be on any given day, but that's not a problem. It's always runnable.

Great pics, guys. It brought back some great memories of that stretch. Thanks for posting. I think I might pop down and do the run from Horburg to Rocky on the July 1 long weekend.

I'll be on the North Sask on the 6, 7 and 8th. I'll be in a group of 8. I'll also be in my solo boat which will be interesting to see how well it handles the water. Mad River Freedom Solo, it's a whitewater tripping boat, but in waves like that, I may be swamped especially since I don't have a spray deck. I may have to see if it's posible.

You would have no trouble solo on this river, any of the obstacles can be skirted. Devils Elbow is a great place to set up camp, unload the gear and play. Lots of open canoes go through here successfully, though I have never seen a solo do it. The open canoers just backpaddle to control there canoe and ease through everything. This is very effective but not as much fun to watch.

In 2005 our group included three solo boats. One was exactly like the boat you own. They had floatation but we deckless. If you are full of gear and not floatation then just secure a spray shield on the bow. This can be done with almost any material as long as you have it arched.

I will have partial flotation. Full bag in the front, and a tamdom end bad in the stern. My barrell will to in the stern behind the stern thwart and my dry bag fits snug undernieth my bow thwart. I'll take a picture of it and post it if I have time. I'm just adding my tie down points tonight. I'm also giving some thought as to removing my stern thwart as it gets in the way when packing my boat. I'll see how I deal with it on this trip and report back.
Thanks for the info so far though. It'll be interesting to see how well I fare keeping up with four tandem boats.

EcoCanoe,

What strectch of the river do you plan to do? If you put in at Sauders you cut a good distance off of the trip. Some of the nicest riverscape is on the upper stretch though nearer the Forrestry truck road though. I would estimate that we paddle a good half the distance and just float the rest. The river speed is anywhere from 3-11 km/hr, at least on the sections I was watching.

Post subject:  Another Trip report for the same weekend on the same river.

I was on the river about 1/2 a day behind Monster and Dunk'in.

I'm sure they are more exprienced than I on the river, so keep that in mind if you read my report. it is at:

The pictures are all links to larger versions. Hope you can pardon the poor spelling and what not. None so thrilling as the pictures provided by the other guys.

Cheers
