Hello,

I am planning to do the loop from Contact Lake going counterclockwise through Sulphide, Dog River, Freda, etc , Contact and entering from the MacKay access point.

Has anyone done this trip recently. Just wondering how the portages are. Any additional info would be great. I hear leaving the car at Mackay is safer than Lynx but no guarantees so I am considering shuttling through MRO.

I plan to do this over 5-6 days allowing some time for windy days. If my friend cannot make it I will be doing it solo.

Looking for some insight from anyone who has done this.

Cheers,
Nayeem

G-morning!
The McKay lake parking is pretty safe, I wouldn’t hesitate. Lots of people long term park there to access their camps.
U might want to check with CRCO to see if that area was burnt in ‘14. West of McKay was scorched and obliterated the portages.
Let’s us know what u find out, I’d love to hit that area as well this fall.
Safe journeys,
Molly

Hi, nymslm,
I have had no problems with parking vehicles at MacKay Lake.
I assume you are going through Cote and Baldhead to get to Contact Lake?
I can follow your trip through to Freda but I'm not sure how you are going from Freda back to Contact?

If you PM me, I can send you a couple of trip reports that should include most of the lakes and portages along your route.

Thanks Molly and Ralph for your comments. I parked at MacKay without any issues and would not hesitate to park there in the future. Thank you!

Before doing the whole loop I decided to test my skills a few weeks ago in July. I made it to Contact in a couple of hours and decided to spend the night there and returned the next day. I did pretty good considering it was my first solo trip. As much as I want to do the whole loop, I will wait until I build a little more confidence.

Ralph: From Freda, one would go through a nameless lake into Sim, Freestone, a 1+ KM portage and then back into Contact. This loop is described in The Paddling Routes of North Central SK (Trip 13). I believe this is also known as the original Route #21 from the govt publications.

Instead of doing this loop, I decided to go to McLennan Lake area next week for 4-5 days.
