We just completed a trip down the Wanipigow from Wallace Lake and up the Broadleaf to Kosteck Lake. We waypointed the portages/rapids that don't show on the map, paced the portages and will have a complete report, with mapping, soon. It was high water and a tough upstream slog, but worth it until the last day when we came down the Wanipigow to the Birch Falls take out. We have notes on those portages as well, excepting the non-existent one around the two big falls. It was a tough trip, the last portion we shant ever do again. It was a driving rain all day and slogging down a portion of river we hadn't done before. to be continued... |

Now I have finished the mapping portion of this report. They will be large format for ease of reading hopefully. I have included as much information on each portage as I had taken down at the time and the next step in this report will be the addition of photo's of the rapids at the portages so you the viewer can class them as I cannot do that. In that way, you can decide what you can or cannot run on these rivers. Keep in mind, we were going downstream on the Wanipigow R from Wallace Lake and upstream on the Broadleaf R to Kosteck Lake, so the portage take outs are based on that. For tripping the other way, just reverse them. We also had very high water during our trip, the fall rate of flow at Leaf Lake on July 5th was 4" in 24 hours and the whole system drained out almost 2 feet in 9 days. It was actually higher than Spring levels so take that into account when viewing the photo's. to be continued... |

The photo's of the rapids that I have follow and are labelled according to their location on the maps. I know some aren't too good but in the future I will try to get better ones, besides, those who run them will check 'em out first anyway I figure. Karin |

P8 and BP 1 where the Broadleaf enters the Wanipigow. P8 is 4 photo's stitched together to try to show the entire rapid at once, it isn't very big, but it is very nice. I don't have a photo of BP2, it is a little one with a boulder in the middle, likely just a swift. |
