We are intending to paddle the George River next week and are wondering how we can get from Schefferville to Lac Attikamagen. We tried contacting an individual in Schefferville named in a trip report, but have not had a reply after two messages.

You could try Norpaq, I think they have an office in Schefferville during the summer season

https://www.norpaq.com/about-us

You could also try the local first nations community

Thanks for the suggestion but we drew a blank when we contacted them. Neither were interested in helping us out. One had not heard of the George River. We will leave it to trying to make contact with someone while on the train or when we get into Shcefferville.

The first time I did the George was via the DePas in 2008, we used Gilles Porlier who at that time basically ran the town, he was difficult to deal with but but did arrange a shuttle for us. This may be the name you saw in previous reports, I just Googled him and apparently he left town in 2015 (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal ... -1.2895906).

In 2010 I paddled the George again but flew in to the headwaters using Air Saguenay, they picked us up at the train station and took us to their float base. Unfortunately Air Saguenay went bankrupt in 2019 following a fatal crash. The assets were bought by Air Tunilik (https://airtunilik.com/en/hydrobases/ait) who claim that they are operating out of that base. Maybe they could help?

My third trip was in 2018 but for that solo trip I started from the Smallwood Reservoir and never went near Schefferville.

The only other suggestion I have would be the Northern Store, they tend to know everyone in town, probably have a big truck and might be able to point you in the right direction.

Do you have arrangements in Kangiqsualujjuaq to take care of your boats/gear? For those first two trips I used Jean-Guy St-Aubin, he has had health issues in recent years so I don't think he is available but his son Felix St-Aubin helped out for my 2018 trip, unfortunately I have no contact information for him.

Having now paddled the upper George twice I'm like to go back at some point and do the DePas route again. While the Upper George is really very nice it's hard to beat the lower river below Indian House Lake (and even that 100+km part is enjoyable).

Today I arranged a shuttle with Owawi Services. I saw a listing of businesses in the area that said they did personal transportation. Derek was surprised to get my call but agreed to help us out.
We are using a Pakboat so when we get to Kangiqsualujjaq, we will fold it up and bring it back with us. We are just one tandem canoe.

Glad you found someone, let them know that they may encounter similar requests in the future.

I can now report that we successfully did the trip. It was tougher than I anticipated which was mainly due to the very low water levels that made it difficult on the upper De Pas.
Jeremy Einish met us at the train station at 10pm in Schefferville and drove us out to his cottage on Lac Attikamagen. We stayed in the cottage that night and left from there the next morning. He was friendly and a pleasure to deal with.
In Kangiqsualujjuaq there are no visitor services. There is not even a cafe. We were fortunate to meet Felix St-Aubin as we were realising that it was going to be difficult. He drove us around town, gave us shelter when the rain came and drove us to the airport. His brother gave us the use of a cabin to stay in overnight. After our experience I strongly recommend contacting Felix before you go. He arranges shipment of canoes back to Montreal if you need that.
Jeremy Einish can be reached at 418 585-3683 or 418 961-9212 cell. Email is derekjeremy_einish@hotmail.com
Felix asked that people contact him through Facebook Messenger.
