Not sure what you mean about free-boating but i did the upper rouge section called 21 miles which is around 18 km of continous II-III rapids with 2 IV drops, a very fun time but a tad long for a 1 day trip. I kayaked it but saw a couple of open boaters on route. Id definitaly recommend this trip early in year during high water as in medium/low water youll be dragging for many km's. Another note is I started early in day at side creek put in at around 10 and only got to take-out at sundown, though this was at lower water. There are maps on this route at fqck.

Is this section that your taking about part of the canyon run? We`re trying to divide it into 8-12km sections. So we can base camp and run a different section each day, playing along the way and running the bigger class 4-5 drops that we would not do on a wilderness trip. Free boating is just that, enjoying all the features of a river. That you would not see by park and play, but by paddling just as hard.
We will be up there in the fall to enjoy the fall colours and the higher waters with out the bugs and the people.
